Covina Blanks El Monte, Colts now 3-0

By Matt Schuler

(Covina)- The Covina kids are back.

Billy Livingston racked up over 300 total yards; Peter De La Cruz returned the opening kickoff 93-yards for a touchdown, and the Covina defense forced six turnovers to dismiss El Monte 31-0 Friday night at Covina District Field.

Livingston orchestrated the Arial attack for the Colts, completing 16 of 26 passes for 289 yards. His main target of the night was Running back Gevontray Ainsworth, who caught 6-passes for 130 yards.

Ainsworth was also the workhorse on the ground, rushing for 100 yards on 13 carries, including touchdown runs of 4 and 9 yards.

The Colts led 21-0 at the half, but it could have easily been 21-14 if it weren’t for a couple of inches.

El Monte’s offense had the ball twice on the goal line with an opportunity to score, but was denied both times on fourth and inches by a stingy Covina defense.

The Colt defense came up with four total interceptions, Vinny Venegas grabbing two of those picks. Venegas also had a 20-yard touchdown run on offense as well.

Quarterback for the Lions, Manuel Santa Cruz, completed 16-of-32 passes for 270 yards in the air. Santa Cruz was also El Monte’s leading rusher with 51 yards on 9 touches.

Conner Salazar was Santa Cruz’s main target and finished with 4 catches for 97 yards.

Covina hopes to stay undefeated when traveling to Walnut to face the Mustangs next week.
