  1. The United States beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 Wednesday night to advance to the round of 16 in the World Cup.
  2. Belgium overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit to beat Senegal 3-2 Wednesday to advance to the round of 16 in the World Cup. Other World Cup result: England 2 DR Congo 1.
  3. The Boston Celtics are trading Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George, two first-round picks (2028, ’31) and two second-round picks (2028, ’30).
  4. The Lakers signed free agents Sandro Mamukelashvili, Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton and traded for center Walker Kessler.
  5. The Lakers acquired Kessler, a 7-foot-2 center, from the Utah Jazz for unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033 and first-round swaps in 2028 and 2030. Kessler will sign a four-year, $130 million contract with the Lakers.
  6. The Lakers outgoing ages: LeBron James – 41, Marcus Smart – 32, Luke Kennard – 30. Incoming ages: Mamukelashvili – 27, Sexton – 27, Grimes – 26, Kessler – 24.
  7. Marcus Smart signed a two-year, $13 million deal with the Houston Rockets and Luke Kennard inked a two-year, $13 million contract with the Phoenix Suns.
  8. Free agent center Mitchell Robinson, coming off an NBA title with the New York Knicks, signed a three-year, $47.4 million deal with the Boston Celtics.
  9. Dansby Swanson hit three home runs and had eight RBIs to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 23-3 rout of the San Diego Padres Wednesday. The Cubs hit eight home runs on the day tying a franchise record set last year on July 4 against the St. Louis Cardinals.
  10. The New York Yankees have lost seven straight after a 6-2 defeat to the Detroit Tigers Wednesday.

    Count me as somebody who also mourns the loss of newspapers. But you know who’s really hurting from the end of printed product? The paper companies! That’s why the latest world-saving idea is paper grocery bags, you know, the ones that have to be doubled-up so they won’t break. Sacramento continues to search for the perfect grocery bag material, but the solution that makes the most sense is to make the bags out of politicians!

    I don’t know who any of these NBA players are much less how good or bad they are. I blame my lack of knowledge to the death of the sports page of the newspaper which I used to read religiously including the stat page
