(Montebello) – Schurr scored early and often beating Montebello 34-12 in the annual Backyard Brawl Friday evening in front of a sizeable crowd at Ken Davis Field.

The Spartans drew first blood in the contest, taking the opening kickoff and producing a nine play, 89-yard drive that ended with a 15-yard scoring pass from quarterback Jacob Torres to wide receiver Luciano Torres. The extra point made the score 7-0, with 7:25 remaining in the opening period.

Montebello countered, scoring on a 3-yard run by running back Giovanni Solorzano. The PAT failed and it was 7-6 2:21 remaining on the clock.

Schurr added a second score in the quarter, when Jacob Torres called his own number and scored on a 5-yard blast to make the score 14-6 as the first period ended.

The Spartans increased the lead in the second quarter, when Jacob Torres hit wideout Julian Garcia for an 11-yard score. It was 21- 6 at the intermission.

Schurr celebrated during the 25-minute halftime. The Spartans inducted three former student athletes into the Spartan Hall of Fame. Additionally, the school honored the members and coaches of the 1980 and 2006 CIF Championship Football teams.

The Spartans scored again in the third quarter when Jacob Torres hit paydirt on a 2-yard TD blast. This made the score 27-6 after three quarters of play.

Each team scored in the fourth quarter. Schurr’s Jacob Morago found the end zone on a 2-yard rush. With the extra point the Spartans led 34-6 with 8:15 remaining in the contest.

Montebello’s answered on the very next play, when Jared Gomez returned the kickoff 65 yards for the game’s final TD making the score 34-12 as the game came to an end.

Jacob Torres led the way for the Spartans throwing for 131 yards, running for 20 more, and accounting for three of Schurr’s five touchdowns.

Schurr’s next contest is Friday when the Spartans travel to La Canada while Montebello’s next game is on October 9th when they will host Bell Gardens.
