Moors Beat Panthers for Fourth Straight Win

By Ron Vrooman

(Alhambra) -An explosive offense and three-plus quarters of crushing defense propelled Alhambra to a 35-7 lead and an eventual 35-20 homecoming victory over the visiting Rosemead Panthers on Friday night.

The win was the Moors’ fourth straight after they opened the season with consecutive blowout losses to Glen Wilson and San Marino. The Panthers fell to 1-6 with their sixth straight loss.

Alhambra quarterback Josh Calderon completed 11 of 18 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown, while running backs Chris Aguilar and Nathan Rabadan each rushed for two scores. Aguilar carried the ball eight times for 122 yards, and Rabadan rushed 10 times for 72 yards to once again give the Moors a solid one-two punch on the ground.

Calderon, a sophomore, threw the ball to six different receivers as he continued to develop as the Moors’ starting quarterback.

Receiver Moses Llamas, who a few weeks ago contended for the starting job, took a screen pass from Calderon 64 yards for a score and ended up with two catches for a total of 69 yards. Joseph Hernandez had two receptions for 58 yards; his 34-yard catch on the Moors’ first play from scrimmage set up a 15-yard touchdown run by Rabadan.

The Moors gained 383 total yards while holding the Panthers to 174 yards. Alhambra’s defense allowed Rosemead only 50 yards from scrimmage until the last eight minutes of the game, when the Panthers scored twice against the Moors’ second string.

Rosemead quarterback Logan Mojica connected on nine of 22 passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns, and running back Daniel Aguilar rushed 16 times for 64 yards and a score for the Panthers.
