Love the cheers SG , just don’t like many aspects of new playoff format and the conclusions that fans draw from it. Should be SG and Pioneer making big runs in D14 , and that says it all.
Good luck and enjoy the wins !
@Del Rio Watcher,
I’m gonna take it a step further. The D-11 championship will actually take place in round 2 when Grand Terrace plays San Gorgonio.
The inland empire is a different animal, especially those more obscure schools you don’t hear much about.
Oiler nation thats a funny handle. Shouldn’t you have at least won one? To be called a nation. Lil Petie almost accomplished getting in at D14. All he had to do is beat SG! To bad the oilers suck that bad. To bad HATER NATION!!
Top seeded Santa Fe got no favors by getting 4-6 Grand Terrace. GT played a monster preseason full of teams like Bonita,Etiwanda, Summit etc. When they got to league they romped through undefeated. Rumormill has it the SF running backs got dinged up against La Serna. Thats what happens when you have a D3 team playing a D11 team, you get pretty banged up. The game is a pick’em. Slight edge to Santa Fe for home field advantage and Grand Terrace’s 2 hour bus ride through Friday night traffic.
What an absolute joke…
La Mirada almost beat a depleted Warren squad . They were way below .500. To say if they would have lucked into D10 playoffs like Pius did in 8 , they could have made a run is not emblematic of success for that program. Have to disagree with you on that one FBF.
Agree on Pioneer . Last certainly not least !
The Duarte Falcon visit the Sierra Vista Falcons on Friday or Thursday? Who has the power to change the dates?
For the last 5 weeks La Serna hasn’t been tested. That might good or bad. It did not matter to them last year when they won everything. However this is a different team. Is there still a QB problem? Not convinced there isn’t. The good thing the level of competition is not nearly as stiff as last year. If there is a QB problem it will show up Friday. I predict La Serna by two TD’s. As for El Rancho v Bell Gardens. BG has being playing better than ER since week one when ER beat them. A solid defense and strong running game has beat everyone in their path except Schurr. Plus they are tournament tested going all the way to the state championship last year. ER made beating a -55 rated Whittier look like a real chore. Undisciplined play and turnovers cost them the Santa Fe game. In both those games a solid running attack was absent. That said this is a tossup game at a neutral site with a slight edge to Bell Gardens. Santa Fe game coming up.
MVS teams that will be remaining for 2nd round:
Damien, Chino Hills, St. Paul, La Serna, Mayfair, Muir, St. Francis, San Dimas, Warren, Covina, South Pas, Chino, Don Lugo, Baldwin Park, Santa Fe, El Rancho, Wilson, SEM, Nogales, EM, Pasadena, San Marino, Duarte, San Gabriel, Arroyo, and Pioneer….
***La Mirada’s demise does not seem to be as dire as projected. A tough schedule and a tough league. Only lost by 3 points to Warren and they probably would have made a championship run in D-9 or D-10 playoffs if they would have pulled it off.
going to be a sad day for the SGV…. Northview will lose and it wont be close, Bonita is in the same boat which isn’t my favorite pairing or division… D5 teams playing in a division they don’t belong in. Speaking of D5 Troy with the upset over La Serna. BOOK IT JB will be the QB by second half stop the Maui kid and smooth sailing to Quarters #MYTEAMISTROY
The new Calpreps system has been designed to prevent blowouts in the playoffs. This only works if the power ratings reflect a team’s true abilities. I have the nauseating feeling that, like last year, La Serna has once again laid down quite a bit in the regular season and has been rewarded for it by getting into D5, when it should have been placed into at least D4.
If we start seeing lopsided La Serna playoff wins, it is absolute proof of the Whittier club’s rating manipulation. Remember, the Calpreps system is specifically designed to prevent anyone from steamrolling through the playoffs. If and when such steamrolling occurs, it is a smoking gun that somebody is gaming the system.
Go take a look at max preps buddy, all the players that started last year are still there, they only got 1 starting transfer that’s playing, all the other ones don’t get time, I don’t understand what your not getting, go and compare names and jersey numbers if your really serious, only 1 new player is making an impact other than the homegrown players, do better.
I really hope we can recover from last week’s loss to Schurr and show up on Thursday night.
I also hope the 22 point loss to ER earlier this season is not an indicator of what our postseason matchup will look like.
Let’s redeem ourselves!
You said it best ! “Best I shut up”
Don’t jinx us
Go to the CIF website and take a look. Schurr people are obviously not very smart. It says in black and white that you guys had 7 transfers this year. Give me a break. You cannot Win without them. Pretty simple and slimy…But if that’s the way you wanna win then that’s on you… At the end of the day nobody takes you guys serious… slimeball tactics
Humble football players and fans don’t add up to wins. Confidence does. This is not bowling. “After you, no after you”. Have some fun. This is rare air for Titan fans.
@ Anonymous: Oh, that’s right; El Rancho has to play at California High because its new stadium is being built right now. And, I’d like to add that Santa Fe typically plays its home games at Pioneer since SF doesn’t have its own stadium.
Bonita has some good athletes. The Phantoms are Big and fast with a Great QB in Jaden Jefferson. The Phantoms have played Tougher opponents than Bonita. They had Narbonne beat and lost by 4 in the last seconds.
Please be humble . This is good fortune , not good football .
@ .. : I believe that the leagues and divisions should be set up before the start of each season, but your suggestion of doing it after the end of nonleague play would be a great improvement over the current mess.
Alluding to Detached Observer’s comment, there’s no way that a 1-9 team should ever get into the playoffs, if the entire point is to promote quality football and reward excellent (or at least decent) play. Also, how can one justify making league champions play on the road in the first round, while third-place teams in the lowest divisions are highly-seeded and get to play at home?
The existing playoff system is nonsensical; it’s way too subjective and encourages favoritism on the part of the people who run the CIF Southern Section.
I have recently been advocating for local match ups because I’m a local fan. As for the match up, not really much to comment from an SG perspective…. actually more interested in the status of Montebello as I am sure most of us are confused here.
Not sure what your gripe is with having me cheer on a program that has been up and down. Hopefully your teams are playing some great football, god bless!
Who knew?? Pioneer High, a monster team thaat everyone hopes to avoid in the playoffs. A state championship run? Best I shut up.
@ .. : I have no complaint about teams which played each other during the regular season meeting in the playoffs, as long as league rivals aren’t put into a first-round matchup. (League rivals who end up in the same playoff division should be placed in separate brackets to begin with, at least to the greatest extent possible.)
I mentioned the Bell Gardens at El Rancho matchup because I think it’s an interesting story. The Dons probably should be favored since they won the first game on the road, and they’ll be the home team this time. In addition, we’ll find out whether the BG Lancers can rebound from their 49-7 defeat at the hands of the Schurr Spartans in their league finale.
They have 1 starting transfer…
ER playing at Cal Thursday
They had 2 transfers the whole year and only 1 of them plays stop being salty bro u guys ain’t on the same level as them
Granted there are problems both ways. I simply think the creating of divisions at seasons end creates too much lack of motivation not to win or overperform .
The systems is designed for parity . That is its purpose , so I hope it works . Only at the very top or very bottom (D14) is there a lack of parity. This is why Pioneer should roll
I don’t like seeding and home vs away being totally random and based on chance . Why would that be good ?
la serna will win state championship easy. back to back.
El Rancho playing Thursday at Cal
La Serna playing Friday at Cal
Pioneer is playing Thursday at Pioneer
Santa Fe is playing Friday at Pioneer.
El Rancho get last priority because they’re not in the Whittier district and they are being done a favor. El Rancho has played most of its home games at Cal this year and some at Pioneer.
Santa Fe gets priority because they are the higher seed.
All SGV teams are severely overrated!!! They consistently get place at n divisions too high for their teams. If you have a decent season in the SGV you get placed in a good division Vs teams that are out of our league. This system is terrible..
Old days of 3 hour bus rides to play some power house team on their home field (for example Lompoc) that was normally rewarded with a beat down and another 3 hour bus ride.. well been there done that. So I say boo hoo. life sucks and then you die. At least you get into the playoffs and have a chance.
And if you give any credence to Cal Preps and their ratings and then step in and kick the tires of the various divisions. ONE can only be struck by the parity in the divisions in the vast majority of the pairings. There may be teams that won almost all their games playing break even teams, but when you find common opponents you will find similar scores in those games .. very little difference.
Thus I think the current attempts by the CIF Southern Section to make brackets that could end up with competitive games and potential that any team could win the division at the end is admirable.
Consider the way that Sierra Canyon was under divisioned for years and the numbers of championships they won. The old way was not so good. WE still have ringer Private schools usually a Catholic School or two that still are under divisioned.. Those schools should be in their own divisions.
CIF never fails to bewilder. There’s probably some really smart computer program that those folks have abandoned their common sense to.
I don’t think it’s the money grabbing as much as the political correctness, but those two things tend to go hand in hand .
There’s many smaller/rebuilding schools with decent squads and negative power ratings . Teams 0 to -10 are pretty good with some flaws , injuries , issues, etc .
I could maybe agree with all teams at -33 or lower . By mathematical definition , ,these teams are in the lowest 5% of teams in the state and in playoffs. Pioneer with 5-5 record ( one by forfeit) 3rd in 4 team league , getting a #2 seed and being 24 point favorite in first round is flabbergasting! San Gabriel is likewise top seed with easy path through . On one hand it’s great for the Titans et al; on the other hand , SG Green will be telling me that his improving team is actually good .
Many good teams have long trips and long journeys. Titans get a joyride ….. I guess it’s just CIF karma
Good luck to all
With Pioneer, Santa Fe and ER all having home games this weekend, but only one stadium (Pioneer) to play at, these schools have a problem. Cal high is going to be used by La Serna on Friday, so how about letting Pioneer have the place on Friday, then letting Santa Fe use it on Saturday, while ER does the Saturday thing over at Cal?
Agree 💯Ron. The desire for competitive equity creates huge travel inequity ; the troublesome part is that this is all random and not based on league performances, overall record , or anything except how the spin of fortune falls. .From past experience, even should you win 100 mile plus travel game, it takes something out of team for the next week.
Another thing …Pius X gets in at 1-9. ????? Did they get a home game too? How is this deserving . Paraclete beat them , better record , better CPR , but not in . Why ? Fair ????
Ron , nobody cares about the distance.
Focus on competitive scheduling with today’s world .
Bring back respect to League games , use this computer system to establish leagues after week 5 . Nobody knows what league they will be in until week 5 is played. Then only take the 3 automatic qualifiers. No at large. He’s the divisions set up in week 5
If you play the same team twice in a season , then so be it lol
Yes i do know that.. and you’re correct about the score. But I also know that Schurr once again used more than 7 transfers that are starting. How can you hang your hat on that? I wonder how Schurr would be without all the transfers? Probably just average at best. All the schools in the MBT are use homegrown players. Not Schurr. Pretty sad …We will see Friday how that turns out for you guys. At the end of the day you will see Karma. First round departure again. But at least you guys beat us. Lol.. clown show…
I just noticed that there will be a lot of long bus rides for the first round of the playoffs. These include San Clemente at Damien, Apple Valley at Charter Oak, Thousand Oaks at St. Paul, Glendora at Agoura, Aliso Niguel at San Dimas, Rio Hondo Prep at Ramona, Palm Desert at Warren, Wilson at Yucca Valley, and my favorite, Pasadena at Santa Rosa Academy (which is in Menifee).
These are insane travel distances for first-round games. How about going back to the days when we had divisions that made both competitive and geographical sense? (Or at least some semblance thereof.)
In Division 11, Bell Gardens is getting a rematch with the El Rancho Dons. The Dons won their nonleague game, which was played at BG, 42-20.
The Phantoms have played Tougher Opponents than Bonita and that will be the difference . The Phantoms also have a Great QB in Jaden Jefferson.
Congratulations Schurr whatever happens from here head up division 6 football. More than a lot of schools can say. You guys are getting better each year. Not worse and that’s the goal.
You do know that u guys got whooped 42-0 right???, schurr played their toughest schedule in years and ended up 4-1 in preseason, you guys really are salty because y’all are trash cmon now
It’s time to restore the value and prestige of a CIF title by eliminating all teams with a negative power rating from the playoffs. Shame on the Federation for lusting after the ticket income instead of maintaining the worth of its awards.
Nope
This is why new playoff system sucks . Who cares if there are close games? Can we please reward in season performance and not mediocrity .
Montebello sucks??
We’re going to see what Schurr is about on Friday. All the transfers and all the talking will not help them against a solid Muir team. Keep playing that cupcake schedule…. Karma coming soon. Schurr going to get bounced again in 1st round. Same story different year..
Does Shurr have the athleticism(speed) to hang with Muir? I doubt it.
Bonita and Northviews dream seasons were rewarded with road trips against beasts. Higher rating points mean nothing. Cathedral played nothing but tough teams and their defense showed up every game. Bonita will have to out tough them to win. North View plays Long Beach Poly. Enough said. Speed kills.
Montebello sucks!
Whoever is in charge of CIF pairings and ranking needs to get their head out of their nether region.
Bonita, Northview, Schurr, Rio Hondo Prep, and South El Monte all league champs and on the road for playoff game
MVL 1st SEM road game
2nd EM road game
3rd ARROYO. home game
