Everyone Hates La Serna

La Serna head coach Andy George.

By George Hernandez

First I want to say I’ve worked in the district with La Serna for five years now at multiple different schools I’m currently on my third year on campus in the Special Ed department.

Since 2010, La Serna has participated in seven CIF-SS title games and won two-including a regional and state title in 2023. The Lancers have a 66-4 Del Rio League record, with the last loss coming to Santa Fe in 2017.

The Lancers’ overall record during this span is 147-40.

And after all that success, the people outside of “Friendly Hills” can’t stand them.

Read a Del Rio League game comment section, and you’ll see they don’t even have to be involved in the game.

In the past, they were accused of running up the score, and this year, people are upset because they’re not winning enough. To the commentators, it seemed that the Lancers and their head coach, Andy George, knew how to work the system.

But what is it really? I’m on campus at La Serna, so this is not hearsay. I’ve been in multiple classes with their players; they sit in the front of the class, don’t talk back. I’ve seen players like Jayden Northrup weekly in our lunch club, where our Special Ed students work with them. Current player Noah Pena has also promoted our student for homecoming queen. I walk by players like Jordan Bonilla throughout the day and receive a “hello, sir” more times than not. As a team, they also give back to the community around the holidays.

Coach George hasn’t sold his soul to a 7-on-7 guy to get a bunch of transfers in because the kids want to run the spread and look good. They still run their wing offense and pound the rock, which is “boring” and not “fan-friendly.” They attract kids to come here because they consistently win.

Most of the comments and narratives are that the Del Rio League is weak. La Serna didn’t ask to be put in the Del Rio. One of the teams that complained the most isn’t even joining the realignment.

The Lancers make up for their weak league by lining up their non-league schedule against the likes of Northview, Damien, Crean Lutheran, and Edison – all perennial playoff teams.

Another comment is about them being the “Privileged Friendly Hills Kids.” I’ve worked at multiple schools; there is nothing different between them and a kid from Whittier, Santa Fe, or El Rancho. They may drive up the hill in a nicer car to school, but they’ve got a bunch of hard-nosed coaches ready to make them work at practice.

So let the comment section blow up with keyboard heroes chirping about a weak league or poaching – in an open enrollment district. The numbers don’t lie, and the culture is visible to anyone who steps on campus. The coaches continue to teach an old-school offense, the players remain in the front row, and the team continues to line up against the toughest competition they can find. They don’t need outside validation or a new league. They just need to keep hanging banners as a testament to a program that demonstrates its success through winning, hard work, and giving back.

After all that being said the Lancers got placed in Division 5 and will host Lakewood Friday night at Sandra Thorstenson Stadium and are looking for their third straight trip to the finals.

La Serna is now an amazing (13-2) in 1st Rd
CIF Playoffs game since 2010, after surviving a tough defensive battle vs Lakewood, 7-0.

In CIF Quarterfinal games since 2010,
La Serna is (10-2), with Aliso Niguel up next.

    Hmmm

It’s interesting to note how the Gateway League looks this year.
    Downey D2
    Mayfair D7 (5 Div lower)
La Mirada D8 (6 Div lower)
    Warren D9 (7 Div lower)

    Del Rio League
    La Serna D5
El Rancho D.10 (5 Div lower)
    Cal D11 (6 Div lower)
Santa Fe D12 (7 Div lower)

So I’m curious with the some competitive splits vs Downey, as the Del Rio League vs La Serna, do Mayfair, La Mirada & Warren people cry, complain, and moan, endlessly about how it’s unfair for them to play Downey, the way the El Rancho people cry, bitch, and moan about how superior La Serna is to their way lower division program?

    Just curious.

Or is the crying game just an El Rancho phenomenon?

The Whittier District is the culprit here for creating the incentive to abandon Cal, Pioneer, SF and ER in favor of trying to find greener grass on the hill. The administrators’ strategy is to have one super school as a showpiece to demonstrate how well they are managing things. Since classroom instruction is the same throughout the state due to Sacramento’s rules, the appearance of La Serna’s neighborhood and the success of the athletic teams is used to bolster this image of excellence.

I would advise all those crowing about La Serna’s greatness to realize you are being used as a pawn in the game of these administrators. The school hasn’t become any greater than usual, it’s just the promotional game of these suits that has you in a lather. Dust-off your brains and try to see that you are being jerked around.

If you graduated in ’87, maybe you played on the ’86 BG team that beat La Serna 9-7 on a late FG that decided the Whitmont League Championship that year, as it was LS’s only league loss in ’86.

Would love to hear about that game from you if you played in it. Like how much time was left when you scored the winning FG, how long was the GW drive?

I don’t see LS coaches and admin coming on here to stroke their egos either.

George Hernandez is a coach at Norwalk, who is a teacher/aide or both in the special ed dep. at LS for 3 years I believe he said.
He certainly isn’t what you would call admin at a school and he coaches at Norwalk not at LS.

As alumni of LS, I appreciate Mr Hernandez for writing his opinion piece. But in know way was this article LS coaches or admin tooting their own horn.

PS BG had some really strong teams in the mid late 80’s and early 90’s. Do you know any other BG players that played D1 FB back in the day? There is 4 that I remember, they are

    OL Bobby Robertson ASU,
    DL-Anderson Mae/aka Junior Monterrez Nebraska,
    OL-David Ramos -UTEP?? &
    S-Jesse Rafanan – CSUN

The same thing George Hernandez is clamoring about is happening at every single HS campus. Every school be it La Serna, Cal, El Rancho, Santa Fe has athletes who sit at the front of the class and carry high gpas, will attend 4 year universities and say hi to the local “Radio.” Every school has amazing coaches, every school has players who work hard. Frankly this post could’ve been about almost any school in the southern section, except most schools are not 4-5 deep at every position and that’s really the only difference between La Serna and anyone else. I’ll say this, when I played at another DRL school in the 00’s LS was never 3 deep, they were always labeled as being big and soft. At some point a decision was made to open the doors to take everyone which aided La Serna’s current run, this is not taking anything away from the players who work hard, go to practice and play the games. I truly have no idea what is difficult about embracing the situation that was handed to you. Any program/player/coach who is that successful has absolutely zero need to come on here and tell everyone how great they are and how much credit they deserve.

    LS JugglesNuts and Maverick:
I’m a Lancer supporter. A graduate of Bell Gardens class of ‘87 Lancers and living in the area, I support the kids and grandkids of my neighbors and friends who attend La Serna.

Both programs have had their ups & downs. As they are both currently having some success, I don’t see the BG coaches and admin staff coming on here and stroking their own egos. Unfortunately, my gut feeling tells me differently about the Lancers of La Serna. Some of these posts are the primary reason Mr George Hernandez was compelled to give this article such an appropriate title. (I can’t imagine what some of you might posts about yourselves on other social platforms).

Now I’m not disagreeing with his personal perspective. I’m confident that he is giving an accurate assessment of what he witnesses daily on campus in Friendly Hills. But this also gives the haters a platform to vent and counter his claims and quite frankly, I don’t blame them.

With that said, I do wish the Lancers of La Serna nothing but success as they face the Lancers of Lakewood. I also hope Mr. Tim Peterson is wrong about my Lancers of Bell Gardens as we host the Fighting Lancers of Western Christian.
Lots of Lancers battling one another in these two games.

I’ll be candid with you: La Serna is perceived as a very fancy school, the fanciest in the Del Rio. That’s the obvious reason athletes decide to shun their local places and go up the hill. Why just athletes? Because it looks better when applying for college scholarships; the rich (or those pretending to be rich) get preferential treatment in those cases. The colleges will assume a kid from a well-to-do school is better behaved and is free of bad habits. This is the reality of it all.

I have absolutely no problem with La Serna doing very well in any and all sports. That’s fine; I accept that the world has winners and losers. I ask only for those who are winning to admit the cause of their triumphs, and to refrain from claiming they have some kind of magic wand that makes it all happen. It’s entirely due to open enrollment; you know it, I know it, Hernandez knows it, even my dog knows it. So go win you games, but don’t expect the neighborhoods who are supplying your jocks to feel good about it.
P.S.: if you want to talk more with me about this, you can find me in the front of the classroom.

Let’s set the record straight on a few things.
La Serna is embracing the new league realignment, in fact I believe it was La Serna’s proposal that was chosen out of the many proposals for the new 20 team league.

Yes, the one school that complained the most about La Serna’s dominance, took the easy road out to play in a weaker league instead of challenging themselves in the new league. At least their mentality is consistent.

Finally, as much as the haters want it to be true, open enrollment in the area is but just one piece of a larger puzzle that was put together that has made La Serna such a powerhouse. Kids were always finding ways to get to LS even before open E.

Factor in you have the highest achieving academic school, the nicest campus, an excellent culture cultivated by La Vigne, taken to the next level by Beltran, and then to State Championship heights under the leadership of George, plus the offensive system wizardry & coaching genius of Coach Caballero, and all of these things make a complete system of success.

If you play for La Serna you will play for a coaching staff that has been together for over a decade now, has over 200 years of coaching experience, avg 10 wins a year and have won multiple CIF Championships at La Serna as well as other schools. How many other schools have that kind of experienced, cohesive coaching staff ? Not many.

    Go Lancers!!

Local kids want to be part of a winning culture and that’s what LS has built. You could say the same thing about any successful program, La Habra, Downey, La Mirada, they all attract talent because they’ve earned it. Winners want to be around winners.

bottom line has very little correct knowledge concerning la Serna football and the players’ sitting in the front row in their classrooms! I ask you a question : Is it unfair that Alabama U got tons of the most athletic athletes from the whole southwest locations right? Why? Is it possible they wanted to win a national championship and play for one of the best head coaches in college football? And are you sure that the athletes who go to la serna and sit in the front of the room are getting the same quality education and learning experience as El Rancho , Whittier, Santa Fe, and Pioneer players are getting? I challenge you to support your claim on this focus by supplying just a little evidence. But i know you will not even attempt to do a tiny bit of research which could give you some academic data and test score evaluations . Might be enough for you to form a different conclusion being based on scientific data of state test scores, state laboratory actual hands on tests, college entrance exam scores, etc. If i was coaching at the other Del Rio league schools i admit I would not like it either having La Serna always getting the best/ls getting my teams by far best football player i was going to structure my offense around . But parents and their children have the right to want to win big. Also have the right to play for a football team that will help them go play in college and get some form of scholarship

What culture exactly did LeVigne develop at LS? He was good for 5 losses a season from 00-06, no league titles and the typical 1st rd playoff exit and went to the 2nd rd in 05. He didnt have the luxury of open enrollment, something that didn’t come until Beltran showed up.

Yes, Palmer was a wonderful undersized QB, who would have spent considerable time getting knocked on his butt were it not for the open enrollment LINEMEN who protected his action. Let’s also not forget the defensive linemen, backers and D-backs who hailed from areas not on the hill. Again, commenter TDs joins Hernandez and the choir of LS braggarts who completely disavow any knowledge of what open enrollment did to boost this success. Thanks for assuming the readership here is deaf, dumb and blind.

To conclude this bombastic La Serna piece, let me offer an analogy: Brad Pitt was born with great looks, something most men wish they had. Pitt had nothing to do with this, it was just a accident of genetics. If Pitt were to flaunt his appearance quite often, telling others that he’s handsome and they’re not, resentment would quickly build. Few people, especially men, would want to cheer this braggart on, because the guy would be trying to take credit for a gift from God.

This is exactly what’s going on with La Serna sports, particularly football. The program has been gifted the best athletes in the area via open enrollment, giving it a tremendous advantage over its competition. But, instead of following the example of Brad Pitt and remaining relatively low-key about this unearned gift, we have a chorus of alums and fellows like Hernandez mouthing off loudly about La Serna’s inherent superiority. It’s the same as if Brad Pitt were to tell everyone he meets that they should be in awe of him because he’s attractive.

And that, in a nutshell, is why “everyone hates La Serna.” Their success came to them as a gift, not through an arduous process of struggle and dedication. Their preening and posturing about “culture” and “doing things the right way” are laughable, and quite frankly disgusting.

Decidedly mid is Div 7-8 with 14 Div.

La Serna has been in D3-D5 every year besides 1 year in D6 since this format started.

Downey, Muir, & Charter Oak I believe are the only schools from La Serna’s old Southeast playoff Division that are playing in a higher Div. than LS this year.

So LS, along with Bonita & Northview (also D5) and those 3 schools above are all playing in tougher playoff Div. (They have all stepped up) while the rest of the old Southeast Div. teams are playing against weaker playoff competition, some even in embarrassing double digit divisions with your school most likely.

My guess is that Hernandez doesn’t reside very high on the totem pole at LS, and this is a huge suck-up job to ingratiate himself with the people who control that joint. Reading this piece, I began to wonder if the LS team has founded a new religion, and what time its Sunday services are held.

Many comments on these pages don’t get posted because they are far too insulting and derogatory. But it is possible to go too far in the other direction: making it seem that there is some kind of saintly goodness inherent in a program implies a moral deficiency in the others. Put another way, by going overboard on the praise of one, you denigrate the others.

I don’t understand why everyone makes such a big fuss about the Whittier area releaguing when every other area does it every couple of years. Just look at the East SGV area, they’ve been changing for over a decade now. No one says those schools complain.

From what I heard from more than a few reliable sources is this.

It was agreed upon by the Whittier principals to combine with the Montebello schools along with El Rancho. This would have been close to what was called the old Whitmont league. And La Serna would go with La Mirada, Downey, Warren, etc. La Serna didn’t like that so the Whittier Superintendent said they all had to stay together and enter the new big conference of 20 teams. Well guess what, La Serna will still be in the league they didn’t want to be in and the other schools will still be in a league that they should be competitive in.

El Rancho is the only Del Rio school not in the Whittier district so they decided they would honor the agreement they made with the Montebello schools. If you look at the proposals, each one had El Rancho, Schurr, Montebello, and Bell Gardens together because of the original idea of bringing back the old league.

I really don’t think it’s as big of a deal as people are making it out to be. It’s high school sports. Orange County leagues are now designated by the Greek alphabet.

    Thank you, George!

I’ve been an LS football fan since 2000, through the tough years when Santa Fe was dominating the Del Rio League and I’ve seen the amazing changes over time. I still remember the 2010 team with quarterback Buenrostro, Alvarez at running back, and the unforgettable Frankie Palmer years leading up to that 2013 CIF Championship!

We’ve had so many great players over the years, like QB Andrew Henriquez and WR Jake George, along with countless standouts on both offense and defense. And who could forget the State Championship team with Long, Ceron, Castro, Law, Northrup, Tufaga, and the rest of that incredible roster.

There are countless names I’m not even mentioning, but none of those players are ever forgotten by us fans.

I’m a die hard LS fan and so proud of everything this program has accomplished.
    We are LS!

Has anyone in human history ever been more brain dead than @Bottom Line?

I don’t even know where to start with the whole comparison of La Serna to Nazi Germany, so I won’t bother.

If you’re a parent of a football player entering high school in WUHSD, you line up all the programs and check the resumes. There’s a head guy telling anyone who will listen that he’s just waiting to get tenured in the district before he resigns. Another one is an LS retread running the Kirkland brand of the Lancer offense. The next one is a one-hit wonder who had players quitting on him mid-season this year. And the last one is in D32.

Meanwhile there’s a school 5-10 minutes away that makes deep playoff runs in high divisions year after year, with a staff that’s been together for over a decade.

    Who you picking?

You don’t like it? Hire the right people and build your own damn culture. Use a Del Rio League runner-up t-shirt to wipe your tears first.

They didn’t take anything from C, who in their right mind goes for a field goal when you have 4th and 1 in the red zone with an Offensive Line averaging 300 lbs, a double wing offense and a D1 back? At the very worst you get stuffed and LS has to drive 90 yards for a TD. Coach C handed that Championship away.

No one hates La Serna, to point out advantages created by their district is not hate, it’s reality. People hate arrogance. People hate the LeBron and Kevin Durant effect of always wanting to jump to the strong team and not willing to fight to beat that team. Making this post as if La Serna is some kind of victim of unwarranted hate is foolish, they don’t need it.

If you got informed you would know it wasn’t “1 team” who complained the most. It was the parents of the WUHSD district schools, Cal High, Whittier, Santa Fe, Pioneer who got tired of all the best kids from their neighborhood going to La Serna who started putting pressure on their schools admin to stop allowing this to happen. The one team you are taking shots at had zero to do with the realignment, that school had almost a guaranteed entry into the playoffs yearly since all the WUHSD schools were weakened by La Serna’s ability to pull kids away from them.

There is zero doubt that LS has a good culture and a solid staff, it’s easy for anyone to coach in a solid culture that was primarily created by the advantage created by the district, I would not call that hate, I would just say congrats to Whittier Union High School district for putting the resources into creating a great situation at La Serna. I’ve said it 100 times you could plug in anyone as the head coach, you can go to the spread, double wing, wing t, power I, Veer don’t matter and La Serna would succeed because they have more athletes than most teams they will ever play against. Put that staff at Whittier or Cal Hi without all the athletes they have at LS and they would never win a thing.

I seen LS take a title from my mentor Coach C in 2013 in the best HS I’ve ever seen. I went on to get a pair of rings in 2019. I’m just here speaking what I see.

These guys sitting in the front of the class aren’t gaining anything more than minimum-wage job qualifications, which they could get a whole lot easier at their local schools. The thing that pisses everyone off, George, is that the kids who run to the hill do it for the sake of being part of an all-star team, which of course wins big, and that’s supposed to amaze everyone in the lowlands. I’m here to say loud and clear that a kid could apply himself or herself equally well in their own neighborhood school AND RETAIN SOME DIGNITY for showing loyalty to their own locality.

The French hated the women who made nice with the occupying Nazi soldiers in World War II, because it was seen as a betrayal of the French nation. The thing you have to get through your head, George, is that the people of the non-hill areas see the kids who run to the hill for sports as equally traitorous creatures. What’s worse, is guys like you are cheerleaders for them.

Once again, best wishes to La Serna Football.
The next couple of years will be interesting. Not necessarily positive or negative. Just interesting. They have been a well oiled machine with a nice mix of fine talent and fine coaching.

    Well said/written!

Oh hells yeah! Now this is the kind of article I’ve been waiting for. They so jelly.

THEY HATE US, BECAUSE THEY AIN’T US!!!

LA SERNA BABY IN THE HOUSE!

Props to Coach Andy George and his coaching staff for keeping their players grounded and running the program the way a great program should run.

If you’re a high school football player, you won’t get a better HS FB coaching staff, education, family brotherhood, & all around HD FB experience than playing on the hill in the Kingdom that is La Serna High School.

We won a CIF Championship Ring when I played @LS, be that next La Serna legend and get yourself a ring 2! LFG
