Road Warriors Shut Out Dons

By Matt Schuler
(Baldwin Park)-Ruben Elias and Joseph Centeno both accounted for over 100 yards on the ground, Tizoc Monarrez and Robert Angulo each came down with a touchdown grab, and La Puente as a team breached the goal line a total six times in the process of shutting out Sierra Vista 42-0 on their home field Friday night in a Montview League match-up.

Elias, the Warriors main offensive weapon on the ground, touched the ball 12 times for 124 yards and two touchdowns. Elias scored on a powerful 25 yard run in the second to give La Puente a 22-0 advantage with 2:51 remaining. Elias then capped off a 7-play drive with 8:41 in the third quarter, giving LP a comfortable 35-0 advantage.

The Warriors (4-2, 2-1) played very opportunistic and capitalized off the Dons (2-2, 1-1) mistakes early. Five plays into the opening drive, LP back Jose Carrillo fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Joseph Sanchez at the 10 yard line. La Puente counteredĀ  with a 16 play 90 yard drive and score with quarterback Ivan Vasquez hitting Angulo forĀ  the opening score.

The score was only 8-0 at the end of the first, but the Warriors broke it open in the second scoring 20 unanswered points in the quarter. After some trickery and a double pass for a touchdown put LP up 15-0, SV’s first play of the following drive was fumbled and recovered by the Warriors, who then drove 7-plays down the field for Elias second touchdown.

The Dons fumbled the ball on the 10, threw a pick in the end zone and turned the ball on downs in the red zone, which were three drives shutdown by the Warriors defense.

The loss for Sierra Vista comes at a surprise after last week’s stand-up performance in defeat (19-13) against Montview league leader and a Gladstone team who defeated La Puente 37-3. The Dons are also dealing with injury and tailback Carillo couldn’t quite fill the void.

Sierra Vista Plays home against Ganesha next week and La Puente plays at Bassett.
