(MONTEBELLO) — For an offense that likes to establish the run, the Schurr Spartans ran for a total of 284-yards and five touchdowns in their 55-7 win over Mark Keppel High Thursday night at Ken Davis field.
The Spartan offense established the run early and ran often. On the Spartan’s first play of their drive Eric Perez started with a 72-yard run. Three plays later Perez finished the drive when he pounded it in from 10-yards out.
“We wanted to establish the run,” said Spartan head coach Marco Ramirez. “We’ve been having some success with the run this season and we wanted to keep it on the ground.”
Spartan quarterback Sal Chavez was limited to three passes in the first half. However, he did connect on all three passes including a 45-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Handy late in the second quarter.
The Spartan offense scored on all four of their possessions in the first half and added a pick six making the score 35-0 and the end of the half.
To advert a shutout the Aztecs scored midway through the third when running back Alex Ramirez punched it in from five yards out.
Other than the touchdown run, the Aztec offense struggled. Quarterback Tyler Takeshita was sacked three times and picked off.
“Their physicality overwhelmed us, they just ran down our throats,” said Aztec head coach Aaron Sepulveda. “They didn’t do anything fancy.”
With the win the Spartans even their Almont league record at 2-2 and look to end their season on the winning side when they host Montebello next week.
With the loss the Aztecs continue to struggle by adding another loss (0-9) to their season. They host Bell Gardens next week.
