1. Dustin Brown, the LA Kings captain, signs an eight-year, $47 million contract extension.  

 

2. Upland/San Dimas running back Jake Payton

 

3. NBA free agents signed yesterday: center Samuel Dalembert to Dallas, forward Jason Maxiell to Orlando, and forward/center Ronny Turiaf to Minnesota.

 

4. On this day in 1991, Cal Ripken plays in his 1,500th consecutive game and hits his 20th home run of that season, making him the eighth player in MLB history to hit 20 home runs in each of his first 10 seasons.

 

5. Charles Barkley on the verdict of the Trayvon Martin case: “I agreed with the verdict. I feel sorry that young kid got killed. But they didn’t have enough evidence to charge him (George Zimmerman).” “It gives every white person and black person, who’s racist, a platform to vent their ignorance. That’s the thing that bothered me the most.”

 

6. On this day in 1927, hall-of-fame outfielder Ty Cobb gets his 4,000th hit.

 

7. Tampa Bay trades cornerback Eric Wright to San Francisco for a conditional pick in the 2014 draft.

 

8. Dallas defensive tackle Josh Brent (25) announces his retirement. Brent is facing an intoxication manslaughter charge after being involved in a car accident last December in which practice squad linebacker Jerry Brown was killed.

 

9. Schurr running back Abel Troncoso.

 

10. Baltimore Orioles’ first baseman Chris Davis’ 37 home runs at the all-star break ties him with Reggie Jackson and Mark McGwire for the second most in MLB history.
