Game Night: Week One Thursday

Jim Arnold's Condors open up with Montebello

Jim Arnold’s Condors open up with Montebello

All Kick-Offs are 7:00 PM unless otherwise noted

Montebello (0-1) at California (0-0)

Last Year: California 40-26

Every year Cal HC Jim Arnold talks about how he doesn’t have anything and he’ll be lucky to compete. Then he goes out there and makes the playoffs. Montebello has high hopes for this season. The Oilers have a stong group of linebackers and an offense that figures to make some noise. Last week they were boat raced by Diamond Bar and don’t want to start the season 0-2. They should come out ready.

La Puente (0-0) at Covina (0-1) at Covina District Field

Last Year: Covina 41-16

It was a tough start for the Colts. South Hills jumped on their throat and never let up in a 48-7 rout. La Puente has a new coach in Scott Morrison and a new quarterback in Jacob Tovar. The Warriors, who fully expect to compete for a Montview League title, want to get off on the right foot. Covina simply wants to get back. LP gets it done.

La Puente 24 Covina 14

Northview (1-0) at Gladstone (0-0) at Citrus College

Last Year: Gladstone 19-10

Northview’s motor was running at high velocity last week in a 40-0 rout of Ontario. Marcel Perez’ troops were in sync offensively and defensively. Gladstone is coming off arguably one of the best years in school history. Unfortunately most of that team is gone, including Head Coach Albert Sanchez who stepped down after 13 years on the job. Northview has a found a quarterback to replace Victor Garcia in Peter Vandereb. Vikings go to 2-0.

Northview 31 Gladstone 13

Pioneer (0-1) at Glenn (0-1) at La Mirada

Last Year: Pioneer 35-28

Both teams are coming off losses. Glenn’s was a little bit worse. Can Glenn or Pioneer play with the top dogs in  the Southeast? No. Can either one compete for a playoff spot in the Suburban and Del Rio leagues respectively? Probably not. But is it a game worth checking out on a hot Thursday night in early September? Absolutely! Pioneer comes away with a W.

Pioneer 20 Glenn 10

Marshall (0-1) at Blair (0-1) at Pasadena

Last Year: Marshall 31-14

It was a little ugly for both schools on opening night. While Marshall was falling to Poly 42-7 Blair was being pounded by Hoover 65-0. Ouch! There is a difference though. While Marshall, with three wins last year and an eye on the MVL next year, appears to be a team on the rise, the end seems near for Blair. QB Christian Clark and the Eagles will get this one.

Marshall 34 Blair 7
