“This is an embarrassment for the city of Diamond Bar and for the community. I’m not happy. I’m not holding my head high. It’s an embarrassment for both sides. I’m really disappointed.” – Diamond Ranch HC Roddy Layton
(Diamond Bar) – Diamond Ranch broke open a tie game in the fourth quarter to take a 34-20 lead and was on its way to an apparent victory over Diamond Bar Friday night at Diamond Bar High School. There was only one problem. They never finished the game.
It never ended because with 3:16 left in the contest the game was canceled by the officials after a sideline clearing brawl broke out between the two schools. After a delay of about twenty minutes, the officials met with the two coaches and declared the game was over. An official winner of the game has not yet been delcared.
“I don’t know. I really don’t know,” said Diamond Ranch head coach Roddy Layton when asked if the Panthers were awarded the victory. “They’ll review the film and then they’ll make a decision.”
It is assumed the Panthers will be declared 34-20 victors but the officials said too many players would be ejected and there wouldn’t be enough on either side to continue the game.
The melee started after Diamond Bar quarterback Tyler Peterson scrambled to midfield and was hit while going into a slide. Peterson got up and a little pushing and shoving ensued. Soon other players got involved and the next thing you knew it developed into a full scale brawl. Players from both sides stormed the field and punches were thrown as the coaches tried in vain to separate them. It took at least ten minutes to get everybody settled down and another twenty for the referees to render their decision.
***”It’s embarrassing for the city of Diamond Bar and for the community. It’s embarrassing for high school football. I’m not holding my head high. I’m not happy at all. It’s an embarrassment on both sides. I’m not proud. Tonight is a real disappointment,” said Layton.
***With the score tied at 20, Chris Kirchgrabber fell on a Peterson fumble in the endzone after Peterson was hit and sacked for a Diamond Ranch touchdown. The recovery gave the Panthers a 27-20 lead.
***After forcing Diamond Bar to punt again, Diamond Ranch marched 67 yards on 11 plays with Xavier Beltran punching it into the endzone from a yard out for a 34-2o advantage with 3:53 left.
***Diamond Bar then got the ball back and was beginning to move the ball down the field when the brawl broke out after Peterson’s scramble.
***Peterson completed 14 of 27 for 201 yards and an intereption.
***Diamond Bar turned the ball over four times including three fumbles.
***Tyler Brown ran for touchdowns of 13 and 49 yards for the Brahmas and rushed for 113 yards overall. Brown’s 49 yard run in the third quarter gave Diamond Bar a 20-17 lead. It was the Brahmas last lead of the game.
***There were four lead changes in the game. Diamond Bar led 13-10 at half time and the score was tied at 20 after three.
***Allen Salguero had a five-yard touchdown run for the Panthers in the first half to give D-Ranch a 10-6 lead. Brown’s 13 yard run with 1:25 left in the half gave the edge back to Diamond Bar.
***Beltran aired it out in the third quarter going up top and finding Marcus Brisoce over the middle for a 40 yard touchdown as Briscoe got behind the Diamond Bar secondary.
***The Panthers had six players carry the football. Daniel Garcia had 15 carries for 63 yards and Salguero had 12 for 62 and a score.
***Cordell Broadus had six catches for 88 yards for Diamond Bar.
***If the win stands as expected Diamond Ranch improves to 3-0 in the Hacienda and 6-1 overall while Diamond Bar falls to 2-2 and 5-3.
***This isn’t what Diamond Ranch football is all about.” – Layton.
