(Baldwin Park) – Bryan Salinas rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns and Christeon Blackmon racked up 164 yards on the ground to lead Northview to a 42-21 win over Baldwin Park Friday night to secure third place in the Valle Vista League.
The Vikings took a 21-7 lead in the second quarter when Peter VanDerEb connected with Daniel Valencia on a 19 yard TD strike with just over two minutes left in the second quarter. Baldwin Park then failed to convert in the red zone and kicker Dylan Mora missed a 41 yard field goal with just one tick left on the clock in the second and Northview took the two touchdown lead into the break.
***Northview rushed for 388 yards on the ground overall as seven players carried the ball for the Vikings.
***Damian Lavin rushed for 65 yards and a pair of scores including a 23 yard dash late in the third that gave Northview a 28-14 lead.
***VanDerEb completed only four passes but two were huge -the 19 yard pass to Valencia and a toss over the middle to tight end Jared Brito late in the fourth quarter that went for 59 yards down to the one yard line that sealed the victory for the Vikes.
***Brave quarterback Michael Moran put the ball in the air 45 times completing 26 passes for 303 yards and two touchdowns without an interception.
***The Braves cut the lead to 28-21 with 5:29 left in the fourth quarter on a 24 yard pass from Moran to Raymen Barraza.
***Northview responded with a pair of scores. VanDerEb scored from a yard out after the big play to Brito with 2:24 left. After Baldwin Park went four and out, Lavin went into the end zone on a 12 yard run with 1:13 left in the game.
***Northview’s first score came courtesy of an 80-yard run by Salinas in the first quarter. He later scored on a 15 yard TD jaunt with 17 seconds left in the first.
***Barraza was the leading receiver for Baldwin Park with seven catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. Julio Tinajera caught five passes for 69 yards including a 35 yard touchdown pass early in the second to cut the Vikes’ lead to 21-14.
***Baldwin Park had just 79 yards on the ground.
***”We got a couple of guys back healthy and we were running the ball real well. Bryan (Salinas) is a real catalyst for us. We’re hoping to make a run here,” said Northview Coach Marcel Perez.
***Northview improved to 7-2 overall and will face Nogales next week. Baldwin Park fell to 6-3 and with all three losses in league possibly out of a playoff spot. The Braves travel to Wilson next week.
