Paramount Blocks PAT, Beats Downey, 20-19

By Rich Whittington

(Downey)- If it worked out last year, perhaps it will work out this year. The Paramount Pirates defeated the defending Southeast champion Downey Vikings 20-19 on Friday night at Allen Layne Stadium.

A year ago the Pirates knocked off the Vikings 21-17 and Downey then went on a six-game winning streak to take the CIF title.

They can only hope.

Paramount utilized the aerial attack of quarterback Tyrell Davis, who completed 11 of 26 passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns.

Conversely, the Vikings did their scoring on the ground. Quarterback Jorge Reyna ran for a 2-yard score while nicked up running back Justin Huff added touchdown runs of five and two yards.

The difference came after Huff scored on his 2-yard run with 2:20 to play to make it 20-19, but the point after was blocked. This proved to be the difference. It was Downey’s second failed point after attempt.
