La Serna Takes Del Rio Title

(Whittier)- Early on both teams, for a moment, showed they could move the ball, but when the big moments came La Serna did and El Rancho did not in the Lancers 43-8 Del Rio League clinching victory on Thursday night at Whittier District Field.

In seven first half possessions El Rancho punted five times, loss the ball on an interception, and turned the ball over on downs. The Lancers with eight turns with the ball punted once, fumbled twice, and scored five touchdowns.

Frankie Palmer facing a third and 14 from his own 43 scrambled 13-yards. On fourth and one the Lancers Bryce Oliver ran 5-yards. Palmer then threw a strike to Matthew Rosales for 19-yards. Two plays later he went 12-yards to D’Andre Sanchez. On first and goal from the Dons nine, sophomore Anthony Garcia went 9-yards for the first score.

This was followed by a back breaking 30-point explosion in the second quarter as La Serna big played the Ranch out of the game in the first half. Palmer completed six passes in the first half, the only one that was under 10 yards was a 6-yard touchdown pass to Sanchez. Besides is short touchdown catch, Sanchez also had grabs of 12, 31, and 13 yards. Four of Oliver’s six carries went for 11-yards or more. Garcia scored twice and added a 50-yard run. Kevin Ramos had a 54-yard run and two touchdowns.

On the flip side El Rancho quarterback Ryan Arajuo completed seven of 14 for 44 yards in the first half and was picked off. He rushed for 19 yards on three attempts. And that was it for the Dons offense

***Frankie Palmer finished 7 of 16 for 111 yards and a touchdown. The scoring pass was  the 51st of his career at La Serna.

***The Del Rio League title is La Serna’s third in the last four years.

***El Rancho was bidding to win its first league title since 1997.

***Sophomore Anthony Garcia rushed for 80 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries.

***Kevin Ramos topped Lancer rushers with 100 yards on seven attempts. Starting running back Ruben Rios left the game after two carries with a possible broken collar bone.

***Dons quarterback Ryan Arajuo was 11 of 19 for 68 yards and one interception.

***El Rancho defensive tackle Malachi Allen recorded two sacks and a fumble recovery.

***Arajuo was sacked four times, as La Serna defenders Ramos, Luis Camacho, and Nick Picarella.

***Tony Ceron intercepted a pass for the Lancers.

***El Rancho started on the offensive line: LT: Jose Chavez. LG: Antonio Lopez. C: JP Flores. RG: Sergio Gamez. RT: Adrien Perez.

***La Serna started on the offensive line: LT: Travis Miller. LG: Ivan Morales. C: Aaron Gomez. RG: Marc Palumbo. RT: Enrique Huerta.

***La Serna (8-2) and El Rancho (6-4) now wait for the CIF selections to determine who/where they will play next week.
