(San Marino) Monrovia and San Marino met Friday night to determine who would be the 2013 Rio Hondo League champion. Early on the Titans battled toe to toe with Monrovia but the Wildcats turned up the electricity with Kurt Scoby doing heavy damage crushing San Marino 62-21.
The win gave Monrovia thier sixth straight Rio Hondo League title and are almost assured the number one seeding in the 2013 Mid Valley Division playoffs.
*** San Marino was the team who struck first taking the opening drive and marching 68-yards on 11 plays capped by a Andrew Ferraco one yard plunge.
*** The Wildcats needed only three plays to tie the score. On third and long Deshawn Potts hit Scoby on a screen pass. Scoby found a seam, hit the jets and was gone 49-yards to glory. Scoby would amass 355-yards from scrimmage with five scores. 335 of those yards came in the first two quarters.
*** The game looked like it was going to be a scoring battle when San Marino got it’s second score of the first quarter. A 58-yard run from Tenny McFarlane set the Titans up deep in Wildcat territory. Ferraco found JP Shofi on an eight yard pass to retake the lead.
*** The lead didn’t last long as Mr. Scoby was at it again. The senior running back found another crease in the San Marino defense and 74-yards later, the game was tied again.
*** Monrovia got its first lead of the game with 11:20 left in the second quarter. A 64-yard drive was punctuated by who else, Kurt Scoby. This time on a 29-yard run.
*** On the ensuing kickoff, it appeared that San Marino would tie the game as Schofi took the kick off and wound his way through the Wildcat special team. Unfortunately Shofi coughed up the ball at the Monrovia four yard line where the Wildcats recovered the miscue.
*** The game started to get out of hand and out of reach for San Marino from then on. Potts found Scoby on a 68-yard touchdown strike and Kahlil Bradley on a 33 yarder to increase the lead to 35-14 with 3:02 left in the first half. Potts finished the night with 154-yards passing and 93 rushing with three passing touchdowns.
*** Scoby finished off the first half barrage on a 92-yard flash to paydirt. Scoby would close out the first half with 218-yards and three touchdowns rushing and 117-yards and two touchdowns receiving.
*** The Monrovia touchdowns kept coming in the second half. Scoby took the kick off to start the second half and raced all the way down to the San Marino one. Darione Jones did the rest on the next play to put the Wildcats up 49-14.
*** The Titans managed to get on the board one more time with 9:54 left in the third period. Tyler Spitzer got the ball on the fly sweep and went in from 15-yards away.
*** Kameron Johnson did the rest of the damage for the Willdcats on touchdown runs of 18 and 69-yards respectivley. Johnson carried the ball only five times but gained 113-yards on those five carries.
*** Both teams will now await Sunday’s playoff pairings to see what teams will be next in line.
