(We’ve said it before. No second team, no third team, and we don’t make someone an MVP to move them up and then slide someone else into their position. Lot of debate. In the end we realize we’ve made a couple of people happy and a whole host of others very angry. Our choices, we stand by them.)
OFFENSE
Quarterback
Chandler Whitbord–Oak Park
(Honestly, probably one of the greatest seasons you’ll ever see in high school football. 3,000 yards pass, 1,000 yards rushing. Off the charts. Names to remember in 2014: Eli Snyder (Maranatha) and Lars Nootbar (El Segundo).
Running Back
Donovan Davis–Ganesha
Abel Gonzalez–Bishop Diego
(Davis is overlooked because of where he plays…and, at least locally, so is Gonzalez.)
Wide Receiver
Matt Byer–Oak Park
Jaime Stewart–El Segundo
Jose Ochoa–La Puente
(Ochoa had a great year, it was unanimous to put him on the team with Stewart and Byer. P.S. Check out Byer’s stats…yes, they are real.)
Offensive Line
LT: Allen Rogers–Nordhoff
LG: Brandon Myden–Oak Park
C: Gabriel Rocha–El Segundo
RG: Mario Soto–Santa Paula
RT: Angel Villanueva–Duarte
(Again these players are slotted where they played. The All CIF team had three left tackles, a guard, center, and tight end. Particularly happy with the Soto selection.)
Kicker:
Cooper Garcia–Nordhoff
DEFENSE
Defensive Line:
DE: Nolan Tooley—Bishop Diego
DT: Matt Hall–Maranatha
DE: Jabriel Frazier–Verbum Dei
(Both the defensive ends and outside linebackers on the defense can rush either standing or with a hand in the dirt. Tooley a repeat from 2012.)
Linebackers
OLB: Justin Green–Oak Park
ILB: Koby Welch–Nordhoff
ILB: Shan Hersh–Nordhoff
OLB: Maliek Villafranco–Centennial Compton
(The Nordhoff “Bad Dudes” had to go on, even if it looks a little odd for teammates to be side by side.)
Defensive Backs
CB: Brandon Coppel–Oak Park
CB: Dexter Myers–Maranatha
SS: Brandon Wadsworth–Nordhoff
FS: Anthony Carter–Bishop Diego
(We reached on youth at one of the corner slots, the safeties are very exceptional.)
Punter:
Enrique Gonzalez–La Puente
Return Specialist
Denzel Fisher–Centennial Compton
Patrick Perrigue Award (Utility)
Cameron Blackburn–Azusa
(Blackburn could be plugged in anywhere during his Azusa career.)
