[La Puente] – Sierra Vista was shut down the first half but came back for a 14-7 victory Friday night at Nogales high school against the Nobles.
It was a defensive battle the first half the only touchdown came early in the second quarter, on a five yard run by Alfonso Almodovar, a drive that was kept alive on a roughing the passer call.
Sierra Vista got the ball first in the second half took up six and a half minutes and capped it off with a 34-yard run to paydirt by Eric Terrazas who also took in the two-point conversion to make it 8-7.
Dons defense went back to work forcing a punt from the Nobles.
Terrazas and company again drove through ball to take up over seven minutes off the clock and he scored on a one- yard dive into the end zone making it 14-7 after a missed two-point conversion.
Nogales get a couple first downs but quarterback Michael Cobar’s pass was intercepted by Andrew Alcazar.
Dons looked to put the game away but a fumble by quarterback Andre Malloy gave the ball back to the Nobles.
Armando Serrano, Angel Garcia, Jason Ton and Frankie Zelaya kept pressure on Cobar while Alexis Alonso and Robert Rodriguez shut down the run and forced a turnover on downs.
Terrazas, the areas leading rusher, had to work this week with 27-rushes for 128-yards and two scores. Alonso and Rodriguez combined for another 57-yards on the ground.
Sierra Vista will have their home opener next week against Bassett while Nogales will go on the road and race Hacienda Heights Wilson.
Please correct Eric Terrazas’s last name. It’s Incorrect. You have it as Terrazes, it supposed to be Terrazas.
Thank you
From T. Peterson: I fixed it but FYI – It was a coach who told us it was spelled that way.
I recorded every play had 64 yards before the 34 yard TD run had another 30 on 9 carries after. I could list off carry by carry.
Terrazes rushing totals:
27 Carries for 87 yards
This was a game of 2 equal teams. First, the Nogales QBs name is Hector Cardona. This game was a tale of 2 halfs. The Nogales defense held SV offense in check. Terrazes was held to 10 carries for 30 yards in the first half. Nogales showed how to stop the double wing in the first half. Nogales RB Jerry Serrano showed that he is one of the better RBs in the SGV. Nogales showed that they are going to be a big presence in their league.
