(Arcadia) – Everything seemed to have been working against the Arcadia Apaches Friday evening, even the weather, as the Apaches lost to the visiting Lawndale Cardinals, 36-7, In a contest that was ended early due to lightning strikes in the area.
According to CIF Protocols, when lightning is observed, the field is cleared, and the game is postponed for 30 minutes. If there are any additional strikes during this timeframe, the timing starts again and continues until there is a full 30 minutes without any new strikes. After Friday’s second lightning observance, the game was called with 9:00 remaining in the third quarter.
Lawndale opened the scoring with a 15- play, six and a half minute drive, which resulted in a 2-yard TD blast by RB Sean Weston. Weston would find the end zone two more times in the opening quarter, on runs of 37 and 4 yards, respectfully. K Abraham Cano successfully converted his three PAT attempts, making the score 21-0, Lawndale, as the
first quarter came to a close.
Arcadia got on the board in the waning moments of the second quarter. With 1:53 remaining in the period, QB Keyon Mills connected with WR Derek Ganter, Jr. for a 33- yard catch and run. The PAT was added by K Dan Xu, making the score 23-7, Lawndale, at the end of the first half.
The third quarter did not prove to be any kinder to the young Apache squad. Lawndale opened the period with an onside kick, which was successfully recovered by. Weston would add two more touchdowns, from 30 and 12 yard, to make the score 35-7. The addition of another Cano PAT made the score 36-7, which would end up being the game’s final score. Weston finished the evening with 122 yards and five touchdowns.
Arcadia’s next game is on 9/9/22, when the Apache’s travel to Woodbridge High School to play the Warriors. Also on 9/9, Lawndale travels to Cathedral High School, to do battle with the Phantoms. Kickoff for both of these games is scheduled for 7:00PM.
