(El Monte) – The Arroyo Knights took another step toward another Mission Valley League Title Thursday evening, defeating the visiting El Monte Lions, 33-6, in the friendly confines of B.L. Bergstrom stadium.
The Knights wasted little time getting on the board, taking the opening kickoff, and mounting a five-play, 55-yard, scoring drive, which was culminated by a 3-yard touchdown run by Nate Guardado. The PAT was added by Albert Lopez, making the score 7-0 Arroyo, with 10:10 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Knights added another score in the period when Gabbriel Delgado intercepted El Monte quarterback Alexiz Rodriquez and returned the offering 30 yards for the score. Another successful Lopez PAT made the score 14-0, Knights, as the first quarter came to a close.
Arroyo continued to dominate into the second quarter, adding another TD to its two- score lead. Quarterback Joe Reyes connected with receiver Jesse Gonzalez for a 10-yard touchdown The point after attempt was unsuccessful, making the score 20-0, Arroyo, at the conclusion of the first half.
There was no scoring in the third quarter. However, Arroyo wasted little time getting things going in the fourth. After taking over on downs, the Knights scored on a 3-play, 42- yard drive, highlighted by Guardado’s second TD of the evening; a 1-yard blast. Another Lopez kick made the score 27-0, Knights, with 10:57 remaining in the contest.
El Monte got on the board with 8:42 remaining in the game when Rodriquez connected with receiver Victor Naranjo for a 29-yard catch and run. This cut the Knights’ lead to 27-6. Unfortunately, this was as close as the Lions would get this evening.
Arroyo’s final score was added on the Knights’ last possession. Reyes called his own number and scored on a 4-yard run. The extra point was unsuccessful, giving the Knights a decisive 33-6 lead, as the game came to an end.
With the win, Arroyo improves to 4-3, 2-0 in Mission Valley league play. The Knights next game is next Friday night when they will host the South El Monte Eagles. El Monte drops to 2-5, 1-1 in the MVL. The Lions’ next game is also on October 14 when the Lions travel to Mt. View to battle the Vikings. Kickoff for both contests is 7:00 PM.

Everyome knows that the EMUHSD wants all district schools to be in the same league for ease in schedulimg. It has been that way since at least the mid 70’s
