Whittier Christian, Maranatha, Cantwell and other small privates are investing lots of donations into fooball trying to join the St Francis, Damien crowd. Daunting task but it looks like Pius X is doing it.
I didn’t know you had to live in Montebello to go to Cantwell?Back many many years ago when I went to Cantwell I didn’t live in Montebello and neither did most of my friends.
Cantwell has a very good team this year (for a team >DIV 10). Yes they lost to Montebello but their “transfers” had only played 1 game together and they had a horrible first quarter. The QB transferred out because the Soph QB challenged him for the starting job.
On the topic on transfers, most of these kids were a number 2 or 3 option at their previous schools or went to a school that not did have a good academic reputation. Families will seek out what is best for their child and a faith based education at a private school is usually the better option. You can’t fault a parent for making that decision. I don’t really see a difference between that and say a kid who lives in Pico/West Whittier who’s parents seek a permit to attend La Serna.
As for their schedule I agree they have played some cupcakes however they beat a solid Bishop Montgomery team who tied unbeaten Maranatha, they beat a a good Salesian team in a big rivalry game and beat Village Christian who just defeated a very good previously unbeaten Ontario Christian team.
It’s all relative, Cantwell has historically not been a football powerhouse so their schedule is reflective of that. With that being said the coaching staff along with the new school administration realizes the importance of having a strong athletic program along with the emphasis on academics and a safe environment for the growth of the school.
Cantwell isn’t Amat. Kids are lining up to go there. Kudos to their coaching staff for building a program that attracts kids. As they get better, they will schedule better teams. It’s the Wild West now a days. Who cares about kids transferring. Especially to private schools. That’s part of the game. Good luck Cardinals!
The way Cif is doing it they will be playing way better competition come playoffs dont see them going deep.
Thanks Ron
That’s interesting info
Granted that was a bad loss for them , but they have beaten Village Christian, Salesian and Bishop Montgomery all pretty decent squads . The bottom of their league is awful it’s true but have been playing well. The coach and his staff are conscientious and do a good job . Sometimes these schools get some 2s and 3s from bigger programs and they’re actually pretty good players
As for playoffs , a teams performance is just as dependent upon whether CIF puts you at the bottom of Division 9 or the top of Division 10
They should’ve, their transfers aren’t even SOP transfers they’ve been eligible all year.
With 10 transfers, shouldn’t they be in a higher division and shouldn’t they have been able to beat Montebello?
@ Detached Observer: The CIF Southern Section website.
Who have they played?
Cantwell is for real ! Improving each week. Reminiscent of the 1970’s.
I understand Bruin football people are going to attend Friday’s Downey-Warren game to uncover the mystery of why fans prefer some teams over others.
Who has Cantwell played really. I believe they will begin to play when the playoffs start they will be playing better teams i dont see a Cif anytime soon.
What is the portal ?
Is there listing of all transfers someplace???
You’re talking about a team that lost to Montebello and that was before the QB left to Muir. Ok den
Cantwell Sacred Heart is a very interesting team. They have a 7-1 record and are steamrolling through their league. They will likely be in a lower division with a chance at winning CIF. But the most interesting thing is that they have TEN guys on their roster who are transfers according to the portal. How many high school football players are moving into Montebello to go to the local Catholic school?
#3 Even though the Dodgers have owned the Padres this year 14-5, in a 3 game series anything is possible.
Let’s see how Friedman, I mean Roberts manages his batting order and pitching.
