(San Gabriel) – Dwayne Wright, who played running back at Fresno State and was drafted by the Buffalo Bills, has been named the new head football coach at Gabrielino.
Wright was drafted by Buffalo in 2007 and also had stops with the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL as well as the CFL Toronto Argonauts.
He has been coaching for 13 years spending time at West Hills College and most recently Fresno City College.
“It’s a great opportunity to be a part of the community and get started with these student athletes!” Wright said. “I love coaching for the kids and the culture of the game.”
Gabrielino finished 3-5 last year (2-3 in the Mission Valley League) and missed the playoffs. Wright takes over for Joe Hartnett, who was just hired in April but left to take a job at Pasadena City College.
The season kicks off next month.
Are you saying “ beggars can’t be choosers “? I don’t think he was only candidate interviewed. I think these are reasonable questions ,
Go Eagles !
@ just wondering
At this point in time anybody willing to take over a program. Is the right guy no matter of his record in the past. Good Luck to you coach it going to be tough just keep moving forward.
Getting these high profile coaches here in the SGV will raise the status of all SGV coaches. This ex NFL’er is taking on one of the toughest coaching jobs in the area. The only downside is stability. These type will leave at the drop of a hat. If the are successful at a Gabrielino thay will move to a bigger program faster than that.
Wow. A coach with a good resume. Good for the kiddos and the school. Good luck Gab.
Best of luck Coach Wright 👍🏼 The Tongva Nation is behind you!!!
Wish the new coach the best. Hopefully he’s here for the long haul.
Good luck to the new coach in a difficult situation!
Was Wright the coach at Fresno Roosevelt last year ? I see a press release naming him as coach but no corroboration on MaxPreps or CalPreps ……. and no mention of this in current bio. If he was the coach , the results were not good; Roosevelt went from 6-5 (-3 CalPreps) to 3-8 (-26 CalPreps) with only wins vs teams with combined 3-27 record . This is taking a Division 10 team and making them D13 team !
The NFL experience is alluring, but does it translate into lower level high school ball?
Temple City only 6 weeks away
Time is short to get things together, so here’s hoping Wright can right the ship. In the long run, the only real fix is a blue field.
