[Baldwin Park] – Nogales overcame an early deficit with a big second half and went on to beat Sierra Vista 27-8 Friday night on the Dons home field.
Calvin Sheppard started off the game quick on the first play as he took a bubble screen and slid through the defense for an 80-yard catch and run making it 6-0 after a missed extra point.
The Dons drove down the field but a fumble gave the ball back to the Nobles.
A few plays later Sierra Vista’s Gabriel Garcia picked off a pass but the Dons turned it immediately turned it over intercepting a Raul Zelaya toss.
The Dons defense stood up and got the ball back on downs.
The double wing went to work and pounded the ball down field capping it off with a three-yard plunge from Fransico Rochin. A successful two-point conversion made it 8-6 Sierra Vista going into the half.
Sierra Vista got the ball first and turned it over on downs.
The Nobles went to a hurry up offense and drove it down field finishing it off with a 27-yard run by Orlando Zamora. The two-point conversion put Nogales up 14-8.
Sierra Vista fumbled again but the Dons defense held up and forced a punt.
A pick six by Camryn Higgins made it 20-8 early in the fourth quarter.
Sierra Vista was forced to punt on its next possession.
The Nobles then went to the air as Ivan Flores hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass and the extra point made the final tally 27-8.
The Dons will be on the road next Friday to face Heritage Christian while Nogales will go home and face Wilson Hacienda Heights.
