(Montebello) – The Schurr Spartans logged a win against the Arroyo Knights Thursday evening, 21-7, at Ken Davis Field, in what can only be described as an early lesson in what you would like to avoid when league play begins.
The game was marred by the two things that will make a coach old before his time… penalties and turnovers. The teams combined for 220 yards in accepted penalties, while “coughing up” the ball eight times.
Schurr opened the scoring for the evening. After a scoreless first quarter, the Spartans’ Mateo Carrasco found the endzone on a 3-yard TD blast. The PAT was added by Jordan Menjivar, making the score 7-0 with 5:32 remaining in the game’s opening half.
The Spartans added a second score in the opening minutes of the third quarter, when quarterback Christian Breazeale called his own number, scoring on a 13-yard TD rush. The PAT attempt was unsuccessful, making the score 13-0 with 10:10 remaining in the third quarter.
Schurr’s final score of the evening came on the defensive side of the ball, when DE Erik Aragon intercepted an errant pass from Arroyo’s Joseph Reyes, returning it 82 yards for another Spartan TD. The 2-Point PAT attempt was successful, as Breazeale connected with tight end Jacob Escobar, making the score 21-0, as the third period ended.
Arroyo got on the board with 8:20 remaining in the contest when Reyes connected with receiver Javier Ramos for a 35-yard touchdown. The PAT was successfully converted by Jorge Lopez, making the score 21-7 as the game came to an end.
The Spartans (2-1) next contest is a road game against the Baldwin Park Braves next Friday night. Arroyo (0-3) will play their next game on Friday night when the Knights travel to Bell Gardens to meet the Lancers. Kickoff for both contests is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Schurr under achieves year after year same old story hype in the off season and failure in the season and playoffs. They should go undefeated in league play they have talented transfers they have like 20 coaches time to get the job done or resign coach Ramos. These kids deserve so much more do what’s right for our program either get the job done or let someone else lead our program.
Wow struggled to beat a dead arroyo program
It might be coaching but it also seems like Arroyo doesn’t have the same talent level as they did in the past
They had the same record last year, you guys are something else lol
I get it Arroyo lost many seniors from last years team, but the play calling is so bad. They are setting up both QBs for failure. Last night’s game 1st and goal and you don’t pound it in with Huizar. No you run to exact passes opossite side what happens pick 6. Then you try to throw long on 3rd down. Arroyo QBs have no time to throw long the line is not holding. When the left handed QB threw the nice slant pass, what happened Touchdown. Let’s play to our strengths Coach, short passes and pound. not hating on my old high school, we are just better than this.
I am thankful there are no home games this season at BL Bergstrom.
Coaching is the most important ingredient in football. For proof, look no further than what has happened to the once high-riding Arroyo football program with the departure of Chuck Leonardis. The collapse is complete and astounding.
