Schurr Outlasts South El Monte, 12-6

The Schurr girls get the win over South El Monte

By Rich Whittington

(Montebello) – The Schurr Spartans scored early and managed to hold off several challenges from the visiting South El Monte Eagles, winning 12-6 in Monday afternoon’s Ladies 7 on 7 Flag Football contest in the friendly confines of Ken Davis Field.

Schurr opened the scoring for the afternoon, as Quarterback Ligia Gonzalez connected with Receiver Ollivia Valenzuela for a 7-yard touchdown. The PAT attempt was unsuccessful, making the score 6-0 with 15:57 remaining in the game’s opening half.

Schurr added to its lead midway through the second half when Quarterback Savah Romero connected with Wide Receiver Sophia Garcia for a 12-yard touchdown, The 2-Point PAT attempt was no good, making the score 12-0, with 7:47 remaining in regulation.

South El Monte got on the board late in the second half, thanks to a 2-yard scoring toss from Quarterback Marleen Cabrera to Wideout Amerie Mungula. The PAT was unsuccessful, making the score 12-6, with 2:34 remaining in the contest.

South El Monte had one final opportunity. Unfortunately, Cabrera’s pass attempt was intercepted by Annebella Navarro, thus sealing the victory for the Lady Spartans.

South El Monte, although considered the underdog, was able to compete all afternoon. This was due, in part, to the tremendous defensive play by Kelly Chen, who accounted for three interceptions of the Schurr quarterbacks. Although one of Kelly’s picks was invalidated by a penalty, this was truly an accomplishment worthy of recognition.

South El Monte finishes their season with a record of 5-4. Schurr improves to 6-2 and will conclude their season on Thursday when the Lady Spartans travel to Montebello to play the Lady Oilers. Game time is 6:30 p.m.

Good job, girls! Way to dedicate time away from your primary duties as students to represent your school. Lastly, there’s always room for the parents who dedicated that finite resource of time to see your through your commitment.

    Hello Just Kidding,
I have attempted to cover some of these games. I got a late start, as we were unaware that teams in our area were playing. Add to this game cancellations, miscommunication regarding start times, and scheduling conflicts and you get coverage that is spotty at best. This is on me.
I now have contact information for many of the coaches in our area. This will allow me to do a better job with scheduling coverage, as well as getting more stories written and submitted.
This was the inaugural season for many teams. The sport was new to the players, new to the coaches, new to the officials, and new to the reporters. I will get better.
    Thanks for the comment.

SEM starting quarterback was out with an injury the last couple of games. She definitely would’ve made a difference. I hope they bring back flag football next season.
