  1. Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced he is retiring after 17 seasons at the helm. Alabama won six national titles and had eight College Football Playoff appearances under Saban’s leadership. 
  2. Pete Carroll was fired as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks after 14 years. The Seahawks won one Super Bowl and made the playoffs in 10 of the 14 years under Carroll. With an overall record of 137-89-1 Carroll is the winningest coach in Seahawks history. 
  3. Head Coach Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots have parted ways after 24 seasons. The Patriots won six Super Bowls and appeared in nine during Belichick’s run. 
  4. The Miami Heat waited until Eric Spoelstra’s divorce was final before signing him to a record eight-year, $120 million contract extension. 
  5. Former UNLV quarterback Jayden Maiava has flipped his commitment from Georgia to USC. 
  6. The Miami Dolphins at Kansas City Chiefs AFC Wild-Card Playoff game Saturday night will be shown only on Peacock.
  7. Oregon head coach Dan Lanning, who was rumored to be a possible successor to Nick Saban at Alabama, said he is staying at Oregon. 
  8. Former New York Mets shortstop Bud Harrelson, who was the infield anchor on the Miracle Mets World Series championship team in 1969, passed away Thursday at the age of 79. Harrelson was also known for a fight that he got into with Pete Rose during Game 3 of the NL Championship Series with the Cincinnati Reds in 1973. 
  9. UCLA was routed 90-44 by Utah Thursday night to fall to 6-10 on the year and 1-4 in the Pac-12.
  10. High School Boys Basketball: Derek Peterson scored 18 points to lead South Pasadena to a 70-33 win over Temple City Wednesday night.

    Pete Carroll is so optimistic, he’s probably ecstatic over his firing.
