Game Night: Week Zero

Colony hosts Ayala Thursday night. (Photo by Duane Barker).

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:

Thursday August 22

Ayala at Colony

Great Week Zero matchup. We’ll see what both teams have right out of the gate. For Colony it’s a good test to get ready for the rigors of the Sierra League. Ayala may have an even harder road in the Baseline. Both teams will trade paint until the end. Colony comes out on top.

Damien at La Serna (California)

Another monster game early. Damien has a new head coach in James Stewart after Matt Bechtel resigned in July. La Serna had another great summer after another great season. The Lancers just keep on rolling. Damien beat La Serna last year. The Lancers return the favor.

West Covina at Bishop Amat

Tough matchup for West Covina early. It’s a win-win game for the Bulldogs though. If they lose, well they were supposed to anyway. But can you imagine the upside if they win? It would be a great story but I don’t see it happening. Bishop Amat has just a little too much. West Covina will give it a go but in the end Amat secures the win.

Friday August 23

Muir at Bonita

Bonita has the athletes to keep up with Muir. The Bearcats can also bring the physicality that could give the Mustangs problems. Muir may make a couple big plays offensively and hit on quick strikes. But over the course of the game Bonita may be able to wear the Stangs down. Bonita opens the season with a W.

South Hills at Baldwin Park

Jacob Garcia is looking to have a big year this season. What better time to start than the opening game. While the Braves air it out South Hills may try to pound it and chew up clock. The Huskies will hang around but Baldwin Park will make plays in the fourth quarter and grab the victory.

South Pasadena at Schurr

South Pasadena lost a lot last year – namely running back Jason Hong. Schurr had a nice summer and is ready to rock. The Spartans look like they have too much for the Tigers. Schurr wins by two scores.

Alhambra at South El Monte

South El Monte looks like the class of the Mission Valley League…at least as of now. The Eagles have a good senior class returning and are ready to get off and running. Alhambra is trying to rebound from a rough year. The Moors have new head coach in Mike Mackintosh but they still may be a year away. South comes away victorious.

Saturday August 24

Don Lugo at El Rancho (Pioneer)

This could turn into a Saturday Night Special. Ryan Dominguez at El Rancho and Don Lugo’s Kalib Pacheco both like to air it out. With these two throwing it all summer and the defenses maybe not having caught up to the offenses yet we may see a shootout. Scoreboard operators will be busy. Last year the Dons won 38-35. This time Don Lugo is the last team standing.

Whoever said they are the best staff in the area is a moron. If that staff went to Whittier high school they would win 3 games at most

@ FBFan & Detached Observer: I have never been a defeatist when it comes to Alhambra’s football program. I believe that we have a shot at winning our opener if we play defense, avoid turnovers, and run the ball well enough to score some points and take a lot of time off the clock.
Every week is an adventure, especially in high school football. I hope all the players will be able to stay healthy and eligible during the course of the season.
