(Alhambra) – The visiting Schurr Spartans made it look easy, scoring on their first six possessions to rout the Alhambra Moors, 42-6, last Thursday night.
The Spartans (3-0 in the Almont League and 7-1 overall) are now in a first-place tie with the Bell Gardens Lancers. The Moors, meanwhile, dropped to 0-3 in league play and to 1-7 overall.
Senior running back Elias Navarro rushed 16 times for 147 yards and three touchdowns in the Spartans’ victory. Schurr quarterback Joseph Alvarado completed nine of 14 passes for 187 yards and three scores.
Alvarado’s leading receiver was tight end Erik Henderson, who caught three passes for 62 yards, including a 44-yard bomb for the Spartans’ first touchdown.
Schurr piled up 472 yards from scrimmage, to only 47 yards for the Moors.
Alhambra quarterback Bryan Leonard connected on just four of 12 passes for 48 yards, but he accounted for the Moors’ only score with a three-yard toss to tight end Andrew Ramos in the third quarter.
The Moors’ ground attack was nonexistent, as they rushed for a net total of -1 yard. Alhambra runners were tackled for a loss of yardage five times in their 15 carries during the game. The Moors got only two first downs, and one of those was by penalty.
We just have to get past the boys from Keppel and then it’s gonna be a barn burner for Almont league title against Schurr.
Let’s keep it going BG!
@ LP: Thanks. And, yes, our 6-0 lead against South El Monte is the only one we’ve had in a game all season. But, there are wins to be had in the upcoming games with our crosstown rivals. I’m all for ending 2024 on a positive note.
It’s good to have something to
Play for , and hopefully the coaches can convey the message to the players as cogently as you did here .
It’s been a long season since you had halftime lead vs SEM in week zero; good luck rest of the year.
@ Thank heaven: But first, there’s the homecoming game against San Gabriel, one which I believe is winnable for Alhambra.
It’s still within the realm of possibility for the Moors to finish 3-7 (2-8 on the field of play). A Tri-City title (AKA, football championship of the Alhambra Unified School District) can be salvaged as well, for what that’s worth.
The AUSD is taking a particularly one-sided beating from the Montebello Unified schools this season, so I think it’s probably time to break up the Almont League. It appears that it’s actually going to happen, too.
Rough year ends with annual feel good game
