(La Canada) – Dean Herrington was let go as the head football coach at St. Francis after five seasons Fred Robledo at SGVN Sports and Eric Sondheimer of the LA Times reported Tuesday.
St. Francis finished 2-8 overall (2-3 in the Angelus League) in 2025 and missed the playoffs. The Golden Knights beat Cathedral 28-21 last Friday night in their last regular season game.
In five years at St. Francis Herrington had an overall record of 35-26 and won three Angelus League titles. The Golden Knights advanced to CIF championship games in 2021 and ’22 but came up short.
Herrington had previous head coaching stops at Alemany and Paraclete.
St. Francis will begin the search for a new head coach effective immediately.
Official release from St. Francis:

Great fit for you know who? ……………………………… Jude.
@Translation that is why I support these talents St. Francis and La Salle has to flood back to public schools like Arcadia, Monrovia, La Cañada, Crescenta Valley, Muir, Pasadena, Marshall Fundamental, Herbert Hoover, Glendale, Burbank, John Burroughs, San Marino, Temple City.
Same for Bishop Amat to flood into schools like Monrovia, Arcadia, Temple City, West Covina, Wilson (HH), Los Altos, Northview, Covina, El Monte, Arroyo, so on so forth-especially schools that are as academically solid and such
Problem is, St Franks had Jim Bonds, and he set the standard by which all future hires are measured. Going into a situation where you’re replacing a legend is tough, but I think the school would have settled for Herrington being 2/3 as good as Jim. This season’s disaster indicated Herrington was NOT 2/3 of Bonds, so they canned him. Yes, winning (especially at the privates) is tough, but so is affording the kind of tuition these places charge.
@translation …Overall he did a good job . The first 3 years were very good . Teams got better as season progressed. Last year QB was injured most of the year and he was centerpiece …
This year problematic , yes , but 5 years is a good run. Winning isn’t easy
At this point, just let the talents flood into La Canada. Call me misinformed, if the good number are in the LC area, time to bring talent back to public schools like LC, Muir, Pasadena, Marshall (Pasadena), CV, Glendale schools, so on forth.
Go Spartans
Don’t you just love the double-talk that goes into these official statements? The big-wigs at St. Franks have “thoughtfully reviewed” everything, with some discernment and reflection thrown in for good measure, and decided to hire new leadership for their football program.
They could have just said “Herrington is a loser and we can’t keep charging high tuition rates if the school doesn’t kick butt in football.” But no, that wouldn’t be the way Jesus would say it. So we have this appeal for prayers of support and even an offering of thanks for Herrington’s ineptitude.
