- The Rams beat the Detroit Lions 41-34 Sunday to improve to 11-3 on the season.
- The Chargers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 16-13 to improve to 10-4 on the season. With the loss the Chiefs were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.
- Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in the loss and is out for the year.
- Philip Rivers completed 18 of 27 for 120 yards and a touchdown in his return to the Indianapolis Colts after a five-year retirement. The Colts fell to the Seattle Seahawks 18-16.
- Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza won the Heisman Trophy Saturday. Mendoza became the first Hoosier to win the award since its inception in 1935.
- Green Bay Packers pass rusher Micah Parsons is believed to have suffered a torn ACL in his left knee Sunday in a 34-26 loss to the Denver Broncos.
- Santa Margarita beat De La Salle 47-13 Saturday night to win the CIF State Open Division championship.
- Rams’ receiver Davante Adams suffered a hamstring injury in the win over Detroit and his status for Thursday night’s game with Seattle is in doubt.
- The Lakers beat the Phoenix Suns 116-114 Sunday night to improve to 18-7 on the season.
- The Arizona Diamondbacks signed free-agent right-hander Merrill Kelly to a two-year, $40 million contract. Kelly was dealt to the Texas Rangers last year at the trade deadline.

Equally newsworthy is the atrocious reaction of Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia, who lost to Mendoza. Pavia stated “screw the voters.” Does that mean “screw” even the ones that voted for Pavia? While this man has since apologized for his outburst, the damage has been done. I wonder: if Diego had won this thing, would he have been happy to hear that kind of reaction from the others who lost?
