Rosemead Sent Reeling by Rialto

(Rosemead) – Rosemead fell behind 16-9 after the first quarter and never recovered in 63-32 loss to Rialto Tuesday night in the CIF Division 7 Quarter Finals.

Down by seven heading into the second quarter Rialto went on a 10-1 run to increase the lead 26-10. Lio Madrid scored six points in the quarter and Mike Knox knocked down a three for Rialto to highlight the run.

The Panthers tried to keep pace as Sheldon Young and Daniel Nguyen both connected from beyond the arc but Rialto was still up 33-22 at the half.

The Knights kept up the pressure in the third quarter as Madrid hit a couple of threes and Joey Puyol buried one from deep as well. Young hit another three and had six in the quarter for Rosemead but when the third quarter buzzer sounded Rialto was up by 18 at 49-31.

Rialto put the game to bed to open the fourth quarter. The Knights went on a 12-0 run to start the fourth and just like that the lead was 30. Rialto’s defense put the clamps on the Panthers as well. Rosemead scored only one point in the final frame – a free throw by Nguyen with 44 seconds left in the game. Rialto outscored Rosemead 14-1 in the fourth to secure the win and advance to the semi-finals.

Madrid led the way for Rialto with 18 points including two threes. Knox and Puyol each scored 10 and Amari Gary added nine.

For Rosemead Young scored 12, Rhys Anderson had eight and Jacob Curiel and Nguyen had six.

While Rialto moved on in Division 7 Rosemead finished the season with an overall record of 19-12.
