(Pasadena) – Maranatha named Eddie Ficklin Jr. as its new head football coach he confirmed Monday. Ficklin takes over for Rand Holdren who stepped down last month to take the head coach job at Village Christian.
Ficklin coached at Cantwell Sacred Heart in Montebello for the last three years before resigning in February.
Cantwell went 1-9 last season and 0-5 in the Del Rey League. The Cardinals’ best year under Ficklin was his first season in 2023 when they went 9-3 overall including 5-1 in the Del Rey League. They advanced to the second round of the CIF playoffs before falling to Westminster 3-0.
Cantwell was 13-19 overall (1-1 in the playoffs) during Ficklin’s three-year run.
Last season Maranatha went 7-4 overall (4-1 in the Mesquite League) and fell to Baldwin Park 42-28 in the first round of the CIF Division 11 playoffs.
“I met with some of the players today. They were fired up”, Ficklin said.
