Knights Survive and Advance, 4-3

(El Monte) – Arroyo jumped out to a 4-0 lead and then had to hold on to beat Carter 4-3 Tuesday in the second round of the CIF Division 7 playoffs.

The Knights got four in the second grab the early advantage. Nathaniel Pozar reached on an error and Aiden Esparza walked. With one out Alessandro Lozano singled to score Pozar. After Noah Fonseca reached base on a catcher’s interference call, Jacob Antuna cleared them with a booming double to left field. The ball went over the fielder’s head and everybody scored.

Carter appeared to get a run back in the third inning when Jesus Enriquez scored from third on a sacrifice fly. But Arroyo threw the ball to third challenging that the runner left early and the out was recorded. The score remained 4-0 as Carter left the bases loaded.

The Lions finally pushed one across in the fourth. Keith Lockhart singled and advanced to third on a single by Ryan Vasquez and a walk to Enriguez. He then scored on a wild pitch.

Carter added two more runs in the fifth without the benefit of a hit. Three walks and two errors led to two runs as Jacob Arcos and Angel Acevedo both scored in the inning. But the Knights held the Lions scoreless the rest of the way.

Fonseca started and went five innings for Arroyo. Oscar Lopez came on to work the last two innings and struck out five of the six batters he faced to close it out.

Carter used three pitchers on the day. Arcos started and worked the first three innings before two relievers came on over the last four innings.

With the victory Arroyo advances to the quarterfinals where they will play Norwalk Friday.
