(South El Monte) – Gabriel Canchola threw a complete game shutout to lead South El Monte to a 3-0 victory over Norwalk in the CIF Division 7 Semi-Finals Tuesday at South El Monte.
The Eagles, or Aguilas as the Southmen are commonly known, scored one run in the first inning, one more in the second and one in the fourth. That was it for the offense as Canchola did the rest. He allowed just two hits and struck out four and did not walk a batter. He hit two batters but never allowed a run.
“He was shutting it down and getting ahead early. He finished the game with 77 pitches and that’s hard to do in high school baseball,” said South El Monte coach Michael Gonzales. “It means he’s filling it up and it also means we’re playing catch behind him.”
South took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Canchola, who also had three hits at the plate, doubled to right to lead off the game. He then scored on a base hit by Bobby Rojas.

The Eagles added another in the second inning. Riley Leon reached on an error, Piceno singled and Canchola followed with a base knock to center to load the bases. Anthony Mata then worked a walk to force in a run.
In the fourth inning Canchola again got things started with a double to right. Rojas again drove in Canchola with a single to right to make it 3-0. That was all the Eagles needed.
After hitting a batter with one out in the fifth inning, Canchola retired the last eight batters in a row as the Lancers never threatened.

Daniel Albidraz had the only two hits of the day for Norwalk with a double in the first and a single in the third. Albidraz also pitched for Norwalk throwing a complete game. He allowed nine hits to South El Monte on the day.
The Aguilas now advance to the CIF Division 7 Final when they will face North Torrance.
