Gonzales Steps Down as Head Baseball Coach at South El Monte

South El Monte’s Michael Gonzales led the Eagles to three straight MVL titles and two CIF Championship appearances during his four-year run.

(South El Monte) – Michael Gonzales has resigned as the head baseball coach at South El Monte after four years he confirmed Tuesday.

Gonzales had a nice run at South. Last year he led the Eagles to the Mission Valley League title with a record of 9-3 and 19-14 overall. The Eagles advanced to the CIF Division IV Finals before falling to Frances Parker. They also advanced to the CIF State Semi-Finals. The Eagles had four players make 1st Team all CIF last season and seven overall during his four-year stint.

In Gonzales’ first year the Eagles went 6-6 in league and 13-13 overall but made the playoffs for the first time in eight years. Then South El Monte reeled off three straight MVL titles.

The Eagles advanced to the CIF Finals in 2024 and ’26. South went 73-42 overall under Gonzales and 11-16 in the playoffs.

“It was just time. I took the program as far as I could. It was a great run.” Gonzales said.
