RB Joseph Lara and QB Evan Robbins led the Bonita offense.

(La Verne) – Bonita’s defense held Muir’s offense scoreless Friday night in a 20-6 win over the Mustangs to kick off the 2026 campaign.

Muir was without its starting quarterback Kaiden Agbunag, a transfer from Arizona, because he has not yet been cleared by CIF. They ran mostly the Wildcat alternating between Ethan Leyland and Deveon Blaylock. They had 73 yards rushing and less then 10 yards passing.

Muir’s only score came in the first quarter when Julian Cooke picked off an Evan Robbins and returned it 82 yards for a touchdown to make it 6-0, after the extra point failed. Robbins was playing because Bonita starter Isaiah Guerrero, a transfer from Los Osos, also hasn’t been cleared by CIF.

Bonita responded with a quick four play drive that Joseph Lara finished with a 14-yard touchdown run with just over a minute left in the first quarter.

Ethan Leyland filled in at quarterback for Muir.

Late in the second quarter Robbins hit Matt Milazzo on a 12-yard touchdown strike to cap a 54-yard march and give the Bearcats a 13-6 lead. Bonita took that lead into the half.

The only score of the second half came with 5:40 left in the fourth quarter Isaac Herrera capped a 80-yard drive with a two-yard run to put Bonita up 20-6.

For the Bearcats Lara ran for 98 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Herrera had five carries for 28 yards and a score. He also caught a pass for 25 yards.

A scary moment came with just over seven minutes left in the game when Bonita receiver Omari Sullivan took a big hit in the end zone and was down for several minutes before being carted off the field. Sullivan is feared to have a broken arm. Sullivan had three catches for 31 yards before the injury.

Bonita, 1-0, will travel to Diamond Ranch next week while Muir will take on Pinecrest Academy in Henderson Nevada.
