(Montebello) The Rio Hondo Prep Kares traveled to Montebello to take on the Schurr Spartans Friday night at Ken Davis Stadium on the campus of Schurr High School. The Kares picked up where they left off during the regular season last year with a win shutting out the Spartans 35-0.
The Kares started off the game with a bang when Matthew Montez fielded the opening kickoff and raced 75-yards to paydirt. Kevin Lara came on to boot the extra point and before anyone blinked, Rio Hondo was up 7-0.
Later in the first, the Kares extended their lead to 14-0 when Montez scored again from 11-yards out, capping a 3-play 35 yard drive. Rio Hondo’s stifling defense forced a short punt, setting up great field position.

Rio Hondo added another seven with 3:31 left in the half with a 19-yard strike from new starting quarterback Donald Sheffler to Joshua Fairly.
With just over nine minutes to play in the third quarter, Montez found his way to the endzon again from 65-yards away. On the run Montez broke several tackles including one that seemed like it would have stopped him. Instead, he rolled over the back of the defender and regained his balance and next thing anyone knew, the touchdown was confirmed by the officials.
Montez ended the night with 90-yards on four carries and three total touchdowns.

The Spartans had a tough time gaining any momentum to get the ball down the field. Jesse Palacios led the way for Schurr gaining 47 yards on 13 carries.
The Spartans will have their work cut out for them this week in preparation for another tough game this time on the road at La Serna.
Rio Hondo will return home and get ready for their home opener next week against Troy.
