(San Gabriel)– Andy Guerrero threw three touchdowns and ran for another as San Gabriel won big, 48-17, against Montebello Friday night at San Gabriel High.
The Matadors (2-4, 1-0) knew the Oilers (2-3, 0-1) were solid on defense, so their game was to spread them out in order for Guerrero to stand out.
Guerrero was able to do a little bit of everything, leading them in rushing (106 yards, TD), while Alex Villalobos and Joseph Mayorga also pitched in rushing scores.
Passing the ball was not a problem either for the Matadors. Guerrero ended the game 15 of 19 for 207 yards, connecting with three different receivers for touchdowns.
On defense SG caused multiple problems for the Oilers.
The Matadors only had a 7-3 edge at the end of first, but the defense made adjustments and was able to shut down the Oilers offense the rest of the game.
San Gabriel forced five fumbles, taking one back for six and intercepted another.
The Oilers only offensive touchdown came early in the second when quarterback Matthew Saenz connected with wide out George Romo for a 60 yard pass. He scored again late in the fourth with a 75 yard kickoff return.
“We’re really excited how the defense stepped up and played,” SG head coach Jude Oliva said. “We wanted to spread them out a little bit…we felt that we had an edge up front and we wanted to mix it up running with Guerrero.”
San Gabriel looks to stay perfect in league next week against Mark Keppel.
Montebello travels to Bell Gardens.
