The Peterson Principle 7/15/13

I knew it wouldn’t be long before somebody busted out a “Fix” comment after Arroyo won its own tournament Saturday. After I posted the news late in the afternoon it took all of about ten minutes.

Arroyo has held the tournament for nine years now and this is the second time the Knights won it. Last year they finished 21st. Why wasn’t the fix in then? It takes a lot to run a passing competition of this magnitude. You have to make sure all the teams are lined up, the fees are paid, the fields are striped and the officials are set. Who’s supplying the water? Is somebody manning the snack bar? Does everybody know all of the rules? What? A fight broke out? These are just a few of the problems, questions and scenarios that Arroyo Coach Jim Singiser has to worry about throughout the day. You think he has time to fix a game?

All he’s trying to do is make sure it’s an enjoyable experience for the teams that participate and the fans who come out to watch. His comments after the tournament reflected exactly that. If you’re not happy with the SGV Shootout or the way he is running it then don’t participate. I’m sure there are plenty of other schools that are more than willing to get in. But please keep the fix comments to yourself. It’s completely off base and without merit.

Good to see Diamond Bar’s Antonio “Noodles” Hull playing Saturday but Tyler Peterson was the quarterback from the morning competition all they way to the final and did a great job. Hull hasn’t been declared eligible by the CIF yet but he is allowed to play in passing leagues. My question is why did he transfer? One of the main reasons given was that he wanted to play quarterback and wasn’t going to at West Covina. Well it looks like he’s not going to either at Diamond Bar. How could you bench Peterson? Now what? Another transfer?

Say what you will about Kurt Scoby and I know a lot of people have said plenty. I’ve heard about the multiple transfers, the bad attitude and the GPA but the bottom line is if he does get on the field, and gets the ball there’s nobody in the Mid-Valley Division that is going to stop him.

Senior DeShawn Potts is the starting quarterback at Monrovia and freshman Miles Bryant is the back up. There is no QB controversy. That’s what I’m told.

Mt. View had another good showing at the SGV Tournament. The Vikings were one of the last eight teams standing.

Bonita’s Tanner Diebold just keeps getting better. Look for him to have a huge year.

Can you imagine all of the headlines a sportswriter could come up with for Buena Park quarterback Ahmad Redeemer?

Who wins the Montview? I’ve seen Duarte, La Puente, Bassett, Workman and Azusa and although they all look competitive it’s hard to see much separation. For the first time in more than a decade it wouldn’t be a stretch to say Bassett could win the league.

Marshall went 2-1 in pool play at the Shootout. They won one game on the last play of regulation and won another one in overtime. The Eagles only loss was to three time defending CIF champion Monrovia.

“I can’t be more proud of our football team today,” said Marshall HC Jim Arellanes. “What a difference a year makes.”

That’s my principle.
