(Covina) – Jacob Tovar threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a touchdown to lead La Puente to a 31-14 rout of Covina Thursday night at Covina District Field. The Warriors jumped out to a 14-o lead in the first quarter and controlled it the rest of the way.
Covina cut the lead to 14-7 early in the second quarter but could never got any closer.
***Jacob Tovar’s final line was 15-22-248 yards and a touchdown passing and 6-24-1 TD rushing. It was Tovar’s first game as the starter for La Puente.
***Tovar hit Jose Ochoa a 39 yard touchdown pass with 4:36 left in the first quarter. On the next possession he hit Ochoa again, this time for 71 yards for a score.
***Ochoa didnt catch a pass in the second half and finished with four receptions for 129 yards and two touchdowns.
***Cesar Espinoza and Jovanni Gonzalez did the damage on the ground for LP rushing for 101 yards and a touchdown combined.
***Pernell Smalley was the workhorse for Covina and scored both Colt touchdowns. He rushed for 82 yards and a score and also caught a 15 yard screen pass from Darren Torres for a touchdown.
***Tovar scored on a two yard run with 1:33 left in the contest to cap a 49 yard, 10-play drive to ice it.

***Last year, Covina beat La Puente 41-16. This year’s LP win was a 42 point turn around.
***Covina quarterback Torres was intercepted twice-both in the second half by Gonzalez and Matt Arguello.
***Next week the Colts (0-2) travel to San Gabriel while La Puente, after winning its season opener, hosts Arroyo.
