Christian Lara and Santa Fe ready to battle La Serna Friday night

Christian Lara and Santa Fe ready to battle La Serna Friday night

All Kick-Offs are 7:00 PM unless otherwise noted

Thursday October 17

Olympic League

Whittier Christian (3-3) at Village Christian (2-5) at Occidental College

Last Year: Whittier Christian 28-21

Both teams are coming off tough losses. Valley Christian surprised the Heralds while Village was beaten up by Maranatha. Another loss for either team could be devastating. Whittier Christian may have been caught by Valley but it won’t happen two weeks in a row. Whittier Christian gets it done.

Almont League

Bell Gardens (5-1) at Schurr (2-4)

Last Year: Bell Gardens 27-24

The Lancers have been rolling along after an opening night loss to Burbank. The Bulldogs have won five straight. It’s been a struggle for Schurr. The Spartans routed San Gabriel last week but that win still left them at just 2-4. This doesn’t look like a BG team that is going to slip. Bell Gardens gets the W.

Hacienda League

Diamond Ranch (5-1) at Diamond Bar (5-2)

Last Year: Diamond Ranch 50-22

Diamond Bar has been the surprise of the league. The Brahmas fell last week to Los Altos but knocked off West Covina and Bonita in the two weeks prior. Diamond Ranch has been running over everybody in its path including Los Altos two weeks ago. The big question here is can D-Bar match the physicality of D-Ranch? The Panthers remain unbeaten in league.

Mission Valley League

El Monte (1-5) at Arroyo (5-1)

Last Year: El Monte 38-21

Arroyo hasn’t lost since August while El Monte hasn’t won in a month. The Lions have fallen on hard times while Arroyo has just gotten better each week. If South El Monte put up 50 on the Lions it’s scary to think what Arroyo might do. Knights roll.

Mt. View (3-3) at Gabrielino (4-2)

Last Year: Gabrielino 28-11

Mt. View gave Rosemead all it wanted last week while Gabrielino was getting beat up by Arroyo. The Vikings might have let one slip away last week. Victor Ambruso’s team looks like the real deal. This is a game the Vikings really need if they want to crack the top three and make the playoffs. They should rise to the occasion. Vikes come out on top.

Mt. View 21 Gabrielino 14

Montview League

La Puente (4-2) at Duarte (3-3)

Last Year: La Puente 21-20

The Warriors were stunned last week by Bassett. Although with the Olympians at 3-0 maybe it wasn’t a stunner. Duarte lost the league opener to Azusa but has outscored its last two league opponents 97-0. With both teams at 2-1 in the Montview a loss to either team would make it tough. LP will have trouble dealing with Duarte’s offensive firepower. The Falcons come away with a victory.

Duarte 30 La Puente 21

Del Rio League

La Serna (4-2) at Santa Fe (4-2) at Whittier College

Last Year: La Serna 31-3

Last year everybody was hyped for this game and it went south fast…for Santa Fe. This year the Chiefs should compete. Make no mistake, it may be only October but this game is for the Del Rio League title. Both teams have played brutal non-league schedules and both smacked their opponents in the league opener last week. Should be a barn burner. La Serna has too much.

La Serna 31 Santa Fe 24

Suburban League

Norwalk (6-0) at Bellflower (4-3)

Last Year: Bellflower 45-44 OT

Norwalk let this one get away last year. The Lancers always seem to have one game that jumps up to bite them and this was it last year. Bellflower is still a player in the Suburban after last week’s win over Mayfair. Norwalk does have to be careful. The Lancers learned from last year’s mistake and they won’t let it happen again. Norwalk is to powerful for the Bucs.

Norwalk 35 Bellflower 17

Valle Vista League

Covina (3-4) at Baldwin Park (5-1)

Last Year: Covina 35-0

Baldwin Park’s loss to San Dimas last week was ugly from the opening coin flip. No need to dwell on it but when you get 70 dropped on you it’s hard to swallow. Covina needs a win to remain in the playoff hunt. The Colts are 1-2 in league coming in. The Braves might be a little hung over from last week’s debacle. Covina scraps, and grinds and eventually gets the win.

Covina 28 Baldwin Park 21

Pacific League

Muir (5-1) at Burbank (5-1) at Burroughs

Last Year: Muir 24-17

This looks like it could be for the Pacific League title but keep in mind Crescenta Valley is still in the mix. The Falcons knocked off Burbank last week in an overtime thriller. Lots of questions here. Can Burbank stop Muir’s speed and athleticism? Can Muir contain James Williams? Both teams can be physical but the edge goes to Burbank. Can Burbank force key turnovers? This might be the game of the week. Burbank bounces back.

Burbank 34 Muir 31
