(Eagle Rock) – Nick Watase ran for 231 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries to lead Whittier Christian to a 41-21 win over Village Christian Thursday night in Olympic League action at Jack Kemp Stadium at Occidental College .
Watase had touchdown runs of 10 and 17 yards and in the the fourth quarter he busted off his longest run – 51 yards. The Heralds had a total of 384 yards on the ground overall.
***Whittier Christian led 28-7 at the half but the points didn’t come the traditional way. The Heralds had two field goals, a safety, and three touchdowns with a missed extra point.
***The safety came in the second quarter when Village Christian snapped the ball over the punter’s head and he was tackled in the endzone.
***Heralds’ quarterback Ryan Esslinger nearly rushed for as many yards (66) as he passed for (78).
***David Fischer scored twice in the first half and had 40 yards overall but left in the first half with an injury.
***Derek Brush booted four field goals for Whittier Christian of 24, 35, 41 and 26 yards.
***Down 41-7 in the fourth quarter, Village Christian scored the last two touchdowns of the game on a two yard run by Wesley Deaver and a 38 yard pass from Deaver to Matt Shashaty.
***Deaver completed 13 of 23 for 147 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 79 yards and a score on nine carries.
***Deaver is filling in for injured starter Jesse Hanckel who went down with an injury two weeks ago.
***Shashaty caught five passes for 91 yards and a touchdown for the Crusaders.
***Whittier Christian improved to 1-1 in league and 3-3 overall while Village Christian fell to 0-2 in the Olympic and 2-6 overall.
