San Gabriel 21 Keppel 7
Isaac Valdez threw for 140 yards and a touchdown to lead the Matadors to a 21-7 win over Keppel. The touchdown pass was caught by Mark Covarrubias and Fabian Amaro scored twice for San Gabriel in the Almont League opener.
Covarrubias had six catches for 83 yards including receptions of 28 and 31 yards.
The Mats improved to 3-3 overall while the Aztecs fell to 1-5.
Charter Oak 31 Bonita 0
Brandon Golden had a 70 yard touchdown gallop and A.J. Powell returned the opening kick off 90 yards for a score to lead the Chargers to a 31-0 rout of Bonita in the Miramonte League opener.
Kyle Brown contributed three catches for 52 yards including a 25 yard reception for a touchdown from Travis Santiago. Adam Muema also scored from a yard out and rushed for 68 yards. Golden finished with 75 yards on the ground.
Charter Oak improved to 6-1 overall and will face Diamond Ranch next week. Bonita (1-5) will battle Los Altos.
Gladstone 40 Duarte 14
Paul Flores threw for four touchdowns and 200 yards on only eight receptions and no interceptions to lead Gladstone to a 40-14 win over Duarte. G-Stone’s win sets up a Montview League showdown for first place with Azusa next Thursday night at Citrus College. Azusa was a 34-13 winner over Sierra Vista Friday night.
The Gladiators are now 2-0 in league and 5-1 overall. Duarte dropped to 0-3 and 0-7 overall.
La Serna 28 Santa Fe 23
Oscar Medina scored on a 17 yard run with 42 seconds left to give La Serna a surprising 28-23 win over Santa Fe to kick off the Del Rio League. The touchdown was set up when Andrew Rosales recovered an onside kick at the Santa Fe 47 with just over four minutes remaining.
La Serna dominated the front line holding Santa Fe to just 39 yards rushing in the contest on 17 carries.
Santa Fe went up 23-14 when Alex Flores connected on a touchdown pass to Roman Meza in the fourth quarter. The Lancers cut the lead to 23-21 when Andrew Buenrostro engineered an 80 yard TD drive that was capped by a Richard Alvarez six yard run. That set the stage for the last minute heroics.
The victory was La Serna’s first of the year as they moved to 1-5. Santa Fe fell to 4-2 and more importantly, 0-1 in the Del Rio.
La Puente 31 Workman 7
La Puente bounced back from a disappointing loss last week to Azusa with a 31-7 win over Workman in Montview League action. The Warriors rolled up close to 300 yards on the ground led by Joseph Trinidad, who had a 48 yard touchdown run to put LP up 7-0. Jose Perez went in from six yards out to give the Warriors a 17-7 advantage.
Kalin Bradford racked up 168 yards, including a 65 yard touchdown romp for Workman.
La Puente is now 5-2 overall and 2-1 in league while Workman fell to 4-2 and 1-1 in the Montview.
