(Glendora) South Hills Husky Garrett Fonseca completed a six yard touchdown pass to Ryan Sheehan with 2:13 left to play to erase a 13-0 deficit and complete the comeback 14-13 victory over the Glendora Tartans and win the inaugural Palomares League Championship.
Glendora may have lost more than just the game as quarterback Matt Fink went down with an ankle injury midway through the first quarter. At the end of the game Fink was seen on crutches with a splint on the injured ankle.
The Tartans did score first and controlled the ball for most of the first half. Caleb Watkins got Glendora on the board first with a 35-yard field goal after a nine play drive stalled at the South Hills 18.
Zach Lewallen put Glendora up 10-0 with 4:38 left in the first half with a ten yard run that capped a 10 play 74-yard drive led by Jeffery London who came on for the injured Fink.
The Tartans extended their lead to 13-0 on a 41-yard field goal by Watkins with 6:55 left in the third period.
South Hills finally got on the board with 4:07 left in the third quarter when Jesse Garcia plowed across the goal line from a yard away. The scoring drive was set up by a Quinn Carter 48-yards kick off return.
The Husky defense stepped up when needed and held on third and long forcing the Tartans to punt deep within their own territory. South Hills’ Ryan Carmona fielded the ball at the 50 and returned it 30-yards to the Glendora 20 to set up the winning score.
The win pushes South Hills record to 6-4 after going 5-0 in the Palomares League.
It was only the second loss in 10 games for the Tartans who had been riding a seven game winning streak.
