(Pomona) – Kody James’ pass fell incomplete on a fourth down from the six yard line with 1:32 left and West Covina held on to beat Diamond Ranch 21-17 Thursday night on the Panthers’ home field.
West Covina could have put the game away with just over eight minutes left but was stopped themselves by D-Ranch at the two yard line. The Bulldogs had four cracks at the end zone from the three yard line and couldn’t score. From there the Panthers marched all the way down the field, aided by two pass interference penalties, before being halted at the six.
West Covina led 14-3 at the half but the Panthers came out and rallied in the third quarter scoring twice to take a 17-14 lead. The second touchdown was set up by a West Covina turnover that set up the Panthers in Bulldogs territory.
***Tyler Terriquez capped West Covina’s first drive with a 13-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.
***West Covina had five different players carry the ball and racked up 257 yards on the ground overall.
***Terriquez led the way with 16 carries for 158 yards and a touchdown and also intercepted a pass.
***The Bulldogs attempted only seven passes. Aaron McCorkle was two for six 33 yards.
***Mike Encisco scored from a yard out with 2:50 left in the first half to give West Covina a 14-3 advantage. Encisco had 12 carries for 44 yards and two scores.
***James hit Max Brown on a three-yard TD early in the third to cut the lead to 14-10.
***After a West Covina fumble, the Panthers cashed in when James found Jon Perkins in the corner of the endzone for a 21 -yard touchdown strike.
***West Covina put together a 77-yard drive just before the end of the third with Enciso finishing it with a one-yard plunge.
***Neither team scored in the fourth quarter but both were stopped in the red zone.
***James threw for 172 yards and two touchdowns but also tossed two picks. He ran for 67 yards.
***Davion Gaisie gained 74 yards on seven carries for Diamond Ranch.
***With the victory West Covina finishes 4-1 in the Hacienda League and 7-3 overall. The Bulldogs finished tied with Charter Oak for the league title but the Chargers beat the Bulldogs head to head. Diamond Ranch ends up 2-3 and 6-4 overall. The Panthers could be left on the outside looking in.
