(Montebello)—The Montebello Oilers held on to beat the visiting Northview Vikings, 43-42, Friday evening at Montebello High School. Oilers nose guard Brandon Gonzalez’s interception of Vikings quarterback Steven Comstock’s 2-point conversion attempt on the last play of the contest sealed the victory.
The contest featured the play of two fine young quarterbacks; Montebello’s Ryan Rivera and Northview’s Steven Comstock. The two quarterbacks combined for seven passing touchdowns and two rushing scores.
Comstock tossed scoring strikes to wide receiver Antwaun Ayers (3 and 15 yards),
wide receiver Paul Cooper (10 yards) and running back Elijah Grijalva (5 yards). Rivera connected for three scores…two to Eric Bruesch (4 and 41 yards), and one to Andy Brown (4 yards).
Oilers running back Isaac Mendibles continued to contribute to the Montebello cause. While the Vikings defense did a fine job in limiting his effectiveness early on (they learned that while Mendibles could be controlled for a time), he could not be stopped. This became evident in the third quarter, when the senior standout broke for a 70-yard touchdown run. Mendibles finished the evening with another impressive outing, bringing his yardage total to over 600 yards in just two games.
***Northview QB Steven Comstock: Passing- 26 of 53 for 209 yards and 4 TD’s. Rushing- 18 carries for 152 yards and 1 score.
***Montebello QB Ryan Rivera: Passing- 10 of 14 for 242 yards and 3 TD’s. Rushing- 15 carries for 71 yards and a TD.
***Montebello RB Isaac Mendibles: 17 carries for 227 yards, 1 TD and 1 successful 2-Point Conversion.
***The halftime score: Northview 15- Montebello 15
***Turnovers: Northview 1- Montebello 2
***Penalties: Montebello 6 for 55 yards, Northview 14 for 128 yards.
