Now it’s the Angelus League that is psycho. At first glance it’s a surprise that St. Francis beat Cathedral so handily. I mean wasn’t Cathedral undefeated and knocking over everything in its path?
Well yeah but take a look at what’s been going on with the Golden Knights. In the league opener they lost to Salesian sure…in double overtime. Then they fell to Harvard-Westlake on a last second Hail Mary 27-21.
“It happened right over here in the corner of the end zone,” a member of the St. Francis chain gang told me Friday night during the Cathedral game. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Instead of fighting for their playoff lives, St. Francis could have been, maybe should have been, undefeated in league with a win over the Phantoms. So the 31-14 home victory over Cathedral wasn’t as much of a shock as it might seem.
Yes the Cathedral suspensions, mainly players on the offensive line, did play a part in the Phantoms defeat. But St. Francis would have won anyway…at least on Friday night. They were better on offense, defense and especially on special teams.
I always forget what a perfect setting Friedman Field is for high school football until I make my way down to the field. With the field set down in a valley against the backdrop of home stands that leads up to the campus is incredible. And the Golden Knight fans might be the most loyal in the area.
St. Francis’ wide receiver Jasher Foster is the true definition of an athlete. Dude is a touchdown waiting to happen.
St. Francis running back Jace Harrick is the nephew of former Pepperdine/UCLA head coach Jim Harrick. He’s also a pretty darn good back.
Cathedral’s Andrew Tovar is a good quarterback but It’s a pretty good guess that his numbers wouldn’t be what they are if not for a couple of guys named Jamire Calvin and Renard Bell.
Just throwing it out there but shouldn’t Phantom running back Kameron Johnson be getting more than five carries per game?
Now back to the psycho league. Harvard-Westlake is 3-0, Cathedral and St. Paul, yes St. Paul!, are 2-1 and St. Francis and Salesian are 1-2. So who has the inside track? Hard to say but it appears anybody can beat anybody else on any given Friday night. St. Francis beat Cathedral but lost to Salesian while Cathedral beat Salesian handily. St. Paul beat Saleisan which of course beat St. Francis.
Keep an eye on this week’s Angelus League games. St. Paul is at St. Francis, Salesian is at La Salle while Cathedral is at Harvard-Westlake. It should be cleared up by then…or not.

Warren took control of the San Gabriel Valley League with a huge win over Downey Friday night. I guess the Bears were right. They aren’t just “simply another victim.”
That’s my principle.
