Eagles Blank Vikings; Gain Control in MVL

(South El Monte) – Elijah Benavidez threw six and two-thirds scoreless innings to lead South El Monte to a 6-0 win over Mt. View Monday on the Eagles home field. With the victory the Eagles are in sole possession of first place in the Mission Valley League.

Emiliano Gonzalez came on with two out in the seventh inning to relieve Benavidez and nail down the shutout.

The Eagles got all the tuns they needed in the first inning. Anthony Mata doubled and scored on a single by Bobby Rojas. Rojas then scored on an infield hit by Riley Leon.

Mt. View loaded the bases in the third inning on two walks and a base hit by Luke Davila but Benavides wiggled off the hook as he got Adam Alcantar to hit into a force play.

South added three more in the fourth inning. Leon walked and took second on a balk. He then came all the way around to score when a ball was thrown wildly to first base on a bunt by Damian Cordova. Jesse Zavala then hit a ground ball to third that was also thrown away for an error and Cordova scored. Mata’s single scored Zavala.

The Eagles added a little gravy in the sixth when Matthew Velasquez came off the bench and singled, stole second and scored on a base knock by Zavala.

Benavidez struck out eight and allowed five hits while blanking the Vikings into the seventh. Alcantar started and went the distance for Mt. View.

South El Monte is now 11-8 overall but more importantly 6-1 and alone in first place in the MVL. Mt. View fell to 11-6 and 4-3.

Arroyo is in second place in the MVL at 5-2 and will face South El Monte Wednesday at South.
