[La Puente] – Bassett scored quick and often in its 50-14 victory over La Puente Friday night at La Puente high school.
La Puente got the ball first but couldn’t do anything and punted on three and out.
The Olympians drove down the field and Josh Carrillo capped it off with a four yard touchdown run, a bad snap was recovered and taken in for a two point conversion making it 8-0.
Warriors didn’t have much luck on their second dive getting a pair of first downs but fumbling into the hands of Oscar Urista.
Bassett took advantage and scored a few plays later on a 16-yard run by Nathan Acosta.
La Puente then turned the ball over on downs. This time the Olympians went through the air down the field and quarterback Edgar Garcia found Giovanni Alvarez for a score putting it at 24-0.
The Warriors answered back on the score asNathaniel Frisco found Gavin Delatte in the end zone, after a missed two point conversion it was 24-6.
Bassett got on the board two more times before the half as Garcia hit Daniel Sierra on his second touchdown pass of the half and Diego Rayon hit a 30-yard field goal.
The score was 35-6 going into half.
La Puente got a little life coming into the second half when they got a fumbled kickoff return but didn’t do anything with it and turned the ball over on downs.
The Olympians would get on the board again two drives later when Garcia threw his third score of the night this time to Luis Camacho.
The Warriors chose to pound the rock the rest of the way and freshmen Aydan Centeno scored on a two yard run.
Bassett was still passing up by four scores as back up quarterback Kevin Ramirez hit Alvarez who sliced through the defense making it 50-14.
Garcia went 18 of 27 for 225-yards and three scores and a interception. Alvarez had six receptions for 162-yards and two touchdowns.
Frisco for LP went 13 of 31 for 142-yards with a touchdown and an interception. Delatte finished with eight catches for 94-yards and a score.
The Warriors will turn in their uniforms tonight and finish the season 2-7 while Bassett wins the Miramonte league and will wait until Sunday to get paired in the CIF playoffs.
I don’t understand how CIF placed these teams in the playoffs. Bassett was league champion and they have to travel to Heritage Christian in Granada Hills which comes from a very good league. Garey the second place team gets a home game against Azusa. Can somebody explain it to me? I looked at Bassett schedule and they got beat by Ganesha, Nogales, Cantwel, and BP. Ganesha and Nogales are terrible. No figure.
I’m not a Bassett fan, but I’ve been following coach Spathias’ journey over the years, and respect what he does with what is placed in front of him. A coach that actually “coaches up his kids. Congratulations coach.
He’s all of 6’4 and 275, and he’s a good as any player in the valley. I’ve yet to see a lineman as dominate as him at the HS level. He’s big and mean, with as good a punch as I’ve ever seen. He gets multiple pancakes on the same play consistently, it’s pretty impressive. If you don’t believe me watch his highlights on maxpreps! BEAST!!!
Great job Coach Spathais and staff. Hearing the Olympians win league was great news. My son played for him when he coached the first time there. Pretty impress with the Staff back then who made my son who never played football into a First team Miramonte defensive player. The kids he had back then played as a team. Believed in themselves and I’m pretty sure that how they are now. Sometimes u don’t need talent to win just players to believe in themselves and coaches will then find each and every talent they have!!
Great job Spathais and staff.
I don’t get out to high school games that much because of my work schedule, but I’m a former 2 year Letterman from Bassett and this blowout felt good to see. My brother was there and he was sending me updates. I played under Coach Whaley and my other brother Robert played for Coach Pettingill. This league title is sweet considering they took out L.P. and beat Garey twice!! Great job boys, good luck in CIF.

I’ve seen Bassett a few times, #51 is about 6’3” 260lbs great size not bad but best player in the Valley calm down! But yeah I could definitely see him playing Saturdays.
I have not been to a high school football game in years. I decided to attend this game because my son was coached by Spathias and staff. I was impressed by all those little guys running cycles around a much bigger team. But the best players on the field was a Bassett player by far. He will not get the stats and have all the headlines, but this kids arguably might be the best player in the valley. He is 6’5” and plays right tackle and some defensive tackle. I think, no I know this kid will be playing on Saturdays. He stuck out like a sore thumb, just blowing guys off the line. Every where this coaching staff goes they come home with a playoff team. It’s just fun watching these guys make champions with not much to work with. Good luck in the playoffs and that #51 is special.
