Huskies Dog Nogales, 49-6

By Rich Whittington

(La Puente) – The South Hills Huskies started their 2023 Football season off in grand fashion Thursday evening, as the Huskies bested the host Nogales Nobles, 49-6, in front of a sizable crowd at Nobles Stadium.

The Huskies wasted little time getting started, scoring on their first possession, when running back Sebastian Morinaga scored on a 7-yard TD blast with 9:02 remaining in the games’ first quarter. The PAT was converted by Jonathan Barragan, making the score 7-0.

South Hills added their second score of the evening as the opening quarter came to a close, courtesy of Matthew Moreno, who found the end-zone on a 75-yard TD run. Barragan added a second PAT, making the score 14-0 after one quarter of play.

The second quarter provided more South Hills fireworks. Morinaga added his second TD of the evening, scoring on a 46-yard TD sprint. A third Barragan “Extra Point’ made the score 21-0 with 10:00 remaining in quarter number 2. At this point, South Hills chose to show that they could also get the job done through the air, as the Huskies added three more scores in the quarter…all through the air.

The first score came on a 54-yard connection between quarterback Ceasar Lizaola and running back Matthew Moreno. The second score, a 61-yard strike from Lizaola to Danny Resendiz, came just a few minutes later. The third score, a 42-yard toss to receiver Landon Hansen, was added in the closing seconds of the period.

Lizaola had a perfect evening, completing all eight of his pass attempts, for 234 yards and three touchdowns. Three more successful PAT attempts by Jonathan Barragan made the score 42-0 at halftime.

The third quarter provided only one score. Sebastian Morinaga added his third score of the evening, a 71-yard scoring sprint. Morinaga finished the evening with eleven carries for 177 yards and three scores. A final Barragan PAT made the score 49-0, Huskies, after three quarters.

Nogales got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, when quarterback Jacient Montejo connected with running back Ivan Fores for a 40-yard score. The PAT attempt was unsuccessful, making the score 49-6 as the game ended.

South Hills next game is next Friday night when the Huskies travel to Covina District Field to face the Covina Colts. Nogales’ next contest is on August 31st when the Nobles travel to Sierra Vista to play the Dons. Kickoff for both contests is 7:00 p.m.

Lol….: I’m not a proponent of wing offense, but I will make a distinction between wing -t which allows some variety and double wing .
Still it’s a bitch to prepare for and you must have discipline and tough defensive play . The 12-14 play drives are grinding and can take your offense out of rhythm and out of time .

I think Nogales will have a tough time handling it, even though it’s not my offense of choice.#dontrunupfield

@Detached Observer, the Wing-T, eh? The Offensive Gimmick that gives gives, until it doesn’t. That’s usually when WT gurus usually pack up their one-trick pony show and head to for other less green but still previously untapped pastures.

Hmmmm……ambitious opener for Nogales , but I didn’t think it would be 42-0 at halftime. I guess Matt V offense not tuned up yet . Now they have two weeks to pick up pieces, and prepare for double wing
