Game Night: Week 1

All kickoffs are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated

Thursday August 24

Baldwin Park (0-1) at El Monte (1-0)

Baldwin Park is coming off a tough loss as the Braves let a big lead get away. El Monte picked up an impressive win at home over Pomona. Baldwin Park looked good early before stumbling. Jacob Garcia, Corey Lacy and company just need to finish. This time they will.

West Covina (1-0) at Los Altos (1-0)

West Covina, which lost to Alta Loma in 2022, completely turned it around last week in a 40-3 rout of the Braves. Los Altos retained the wheel in the win over Wilson but that was as expected as hot dogs and fireworks on the Fourth of July. West Covina will pound the ball until it hurts. The Conquerors will eventually get worn down. Zander Requena has a big night for the Bulldogs.

Friday August 25

Arroyo (0-1) at San Marino (1-0)

I know it was ugly but whether ugly, pretty, or pedestrian a W is a W and that’s what San Marino got. The Titans beat Arcadia and they’ll take that to the bank. Arroyo got clubbed by Kaiser but Kaiser tends to do that to opponents on occasion. The Knights lost a one -point game to the Titans last year in the regular season but rebounded to beat them in the playoffs 28-0. Titans may jump out early but Arroyo rallies and gets first year head coach Johnny Argo his first win. Knights by a field goal.

South Hills (1-0) at Covina (1-0) (Covina District Field)

Both teams were impressive in Zero Week. Covina waltzed to a 42-point shutout of Cal while South Hills laid the wood to Nogales. Should be a good one, maybe the best game of the weekend this side of St. Paul- Bishop Amat. Jake Duronslet has come into his own and Adrian Rachal is a tough man to bring down. Could come down to a touchdown late in the fourth quarter with Rachal doing the damage. Colts come out with the victory.

Covina 24 South Hills 21

Charter Oak (1-0) at Chino Hills (0-1)

Charter Oak got off on the right foot last week with a win over Temecula Valley. Chino Hills fell short but you can’t hang your heads over a loss to Glendora. The question is can Chino Hills make enough stops to get it done? Probably not. Charter Oak’s offense will be too much for Chino Hills. Corin Berry to Legend Lyons! Chargers win.

Charter Oak 31 Chino Hills 17

St. Paul (1-0) at Bishop Amat (0-1)

The best game on the docket this week will be played down in La Puente. Two weeks ago this looked like an easy pick. But St. Paul knocked off Newport Harbor and Bishop Amat fell to Valencia and here we are. There is a buzz going on at St. Paul right now that came with the hiring of Mike Moschetti. The Swordsmen are on a roll. Amat is looking to bounce back from last week and will give St. Paul everything it has. But St. Paul pulls off another W.

Rosemead (0-1) at San Gabriel (0-0)

Rosemead needs to bounce back after taking a beating last week at La Canada. San Gabriel is coming off of a CIF title winning season but the Matadors also have a new coach and new players. Right now San Gabriel is the better team until Rosemead proves otherwise. This is the season opener for the Mats. They kick it off with a victory.

San Gabriel 24 Rosemead 10

Temple City (0-0) at Gabrielino (0-0)

Tough one to call here. It’s the season opener for both teams. Gabrielino went 3-5 last year while the Rams are coming off of a 2-8 campaign. Gabrielino had to scramble to find a new head coach when the entire staff left in June. The Eagles found a coach with experience naming Dwayne Wright in July. Wright played running back at Fresno State and was drafted by the Buffalo Bills so he knows the business. That being said it still takes time to put together a staff and have the players learn all of the schemes. The Eagles have had only a month to do that. In the end it might be easier to flip a coin to pick this one. I flipped it and it came up Rams.

Temple City 24 Gabrielino 20

TC and Gabrelino It is sort of like coaching a little league or AYSO team and you have to dig deep to say something nice/positive about your bottom two players, as it is expected..
Looking at the TC schedule there are a couple of games they could potentially win, it is getting to be like Blair High School Football (RIP).
So sad as Blair once was the top rated football team in the nation with multiple front line D1 players and some that went pro.
TC once had the record for the record number of consecutive wins in CIF as they took title after title.
Now it is they ran to their positions well.

I’d prefer to have Montebello vs Cantwell covered .. but that’s just me . Alot of history between them two

Big game you dropped and didn’t cover was
ER vs BG … that’s a rivalry that’s been played for what 50YEARS Plus!

Tbh tho… i think medrano should consider dropping BG bc at this point the rivalry is irrelevant and the old timers care about it more … Didn’t even see a strong alumni support from BG ( any fans tbh) … ER as always has big crowd

But yea BG needs to go and even montebello

Coach, you may be new to the site but TC and Gabrielino were part of the mvn’s original coverage. When has Montebello won anything ?

It’s ok to give the have-nots a little attention! These two squads won’t be heard of after first couple weeks , so give them some preseason limelight! Gab in a tough situation, interested to see if NFL pedigree can make an impact ….

As for your game Montebello coming off an emotional come from behind victory. Cantwell was drubbed by gifted Village Christian squad ; interested to see if new coach Ficklin can right the ship and defensive woes ? His defense at LaSalle as DC left lot to be desired .
